CSGO World Rankings April 2020

Another month of living with the epidemic, many countries apply stricter management policies. That forced the players and fans to gradually adjust to a new temporary world: one without LAN tournaments.

April saw the end of Flashpoint 1, the tournament changed from LAN to online midway through the group stage because of the Corona epidemic. MAD Lions became the champion after defeating MIBR in the final to put themselves close to the top 10 in the world rankings.

Meanwhile, fnatic became the ESL Pro League champion in Europe by beating mousesports. Liquid took the throne in North America with an overwhelming victory over Evil Geniuses in the finals. April also saw the first Regional Major Ranking (RMR) tournament of 2020, ESL One Road to Rio, kick off.

Scoring mechanism

Here are tTo summarize the factors that affect the scores of the teams on the leaderboard each month:

The leaderboard has a base score of teams based on their performance in the previous year (achievement points). Then there is the “Form” score, which is calculated based on the individual achievements of the Players in the team and the results of online tournaments in the last 2 months. Finally, the LANs point, this point is calculated based on the performance in offline tournaments within the last 3 months.

Also, if a team wants to keep their base score before calculating the new month’s score, their lineup must keep at least 3 players from the previous month. And as mentioned above, the results of the online competition only slightly affect the scores in the “Form” section and it is mainly counted for the purpose of ranking some new teams on the rankings (this is possible. Understandably, because LANs scores affect a lot, teams that do not have a place to compete offline but want to go up the rankings must try their best in online tournaments).

The top teams follow each other closely:

The pro arena is now more unpredictable than ever. Since last month’s rankings, three different teams have taken turns topping the world as the tournament is now only played online while their results don’t have much of an impact at the moment.

Astralis, fnatic, Natus Vincere and mousesports are about 50 points apart, and everyone has a chance to top the leaderboard for a given week. A disappointing week has let fnatic lose the No. 1 spot to Astralis.

Looks like things won’t change much. This month, ESL One: Road to Rio will come to an end and DreamHack Masters Spring will begin. Therefore, we could continue to see big surprises and changes in the rankings in the coming weeks.

G2 leaves the top 5

G2 took 3rd place in the rankings in March after finishing second in IEM Kaotwice, as well as performing impressively in the BLAST Premier Spring Series. The Franco-Serbian squad continued that form in the early games of ESL Pro League Season 11, but then lost to OG and mousesports, causing the team to lose the opportunity to progress and have to sit for 20 days.

After dropping form while other teams performed better, G2 needs to reap more results, but the team hasn’t won a big win in ESL One: Road to Rio so far. Spirit hits new heights

Spirit changed their roster in late September, dropping them down to 49th in the world rankings. Since then, the Russian team has continuously improved in form. After a slump in February, Spirit picked up pace in the second half of March, beating ENCE and Vitality in the ESL Pro League. The boys continued this form in April, achieving good results in online tournaments and ESL One: Road to Rio – CIS. In the BO3 series over the past month, somedieyoung and teammates have beaten fellow regional rival forZe three times, as well as North, Virtus.pro and OG, allowing them to qualify for the DreamHack Masters Spring tournaments.

With a place in major tournaments, good form, and only 15 points away from 16th place BIG, Spirit can easily get promoted in the coming weeks.

Complexity is lagging again

Complexity has dropped for the second month in a row and is now just 37 points ahead of the 30th team Heretics after three weeks in the top 15 in March. This is a sign of the team in online matches – a problem that has persisted since since the roster was formed and is causing great concern since we won’t have any LAN tournaments coming up.

Complexity is currently at the bottom of their ESL One: Road to Rio group: winning just one game in five games, and their chances of getting into the playoffs are looking very deadlocked as their next opponent is world No. 2 fnatic. May could be another painful month for Complexity, as the boys must find their form and spirit at Home Sweet Home Cup 3 before DreamHack Masters Spring takes place.

Renegades, TYLOO leave the top 30

Renegades started the year solidifying with Hatz and finished second at DreamHack Open Leipzig, showing that the Australian team can compete with the tier 2 of Europe and North America. Things didn’t go well at IEM Katowice when Renegades lost 2-0 to FaZe and fnatic. But at that point, with ESL Pro League Season 11 and Minor coming up, they didn’t have much to worry about.

Unfortunately, Renegades’ plan soon fell apart when the Corona outbreak forced them to quit the Pro League, while the Asia Minor was also canceled. As a result, the team has had nothing to do in the past two months, losing all of its performance points and breaking out of the top 30 for the first time since April 2019.

Unlike Renegades, TYLOO did not have a good start in 2020 but was able to attend IEM Katowice (last minute when replacing ViCi) and ESL Pro League Season 11. The team had absolutely no door in front of the opponents, only winning right. one map in two tournaments. TYLOO’s rankings continued to decrease when the team announced to change two people, eliminating Freeman and xeta due to the Corona epidemic.

Both teams will have a chance to get extra points in ESL One: Road to Rio in their respective regions. But don’t wait for the team to move up a lot in the rankings until the national leagues are back on – which is unlikely to happen anytime soon.
