It seems that Counter-Strike: Global Offensive will not change to Valve’s Source 2 engine in the near future. According to the news, the developer has canceled this Source 2 engine update for CSGO and this cancellation will still last.
CSGO launched in 2012 and since then still uses the original Source engine, designed eight years ago (2004). Loyal CSGO fans have been predicting for years when this FPS game will be updated to modern Source 2.
Rumors from the beginning of mid-2020 internally show that the update is very close. Valve News Network owner Tyler McVicker also set May 18 as the exact date CSGO was updated. However, recent moves forced McVicker to withdraw his confirmation.
Famous for his accurate leaks and insider information, Tyler explains why the Source update “didn’t happen”.
“There was a meeting and they made a decision.” I said. The reason the project was canceled was simply due to “too much work”. “Right now, it’s not happening. They won’t update to Source 2.”
Update engine – similar to Fortnite’s February 2020 update – allows for improved graphics and gameplay. As the code in the Dota 2 update shows, Source 2 improves rendering, shadow handling, and skyboxing.
While these changes may elevate this #1 shooter, there’s one thing stopping the process. “They’ve grown… the team has been developing it for two years,” he explains. “It’s not that they can’t port games…they can’t port community content.”
From custom modes to new maps and more: community content is already part of the CSGO experience. However, it was the community content that prevented CSGO from moving to the Source 2 engine and so the plan was canceled.
“They have no way for the amount of content created in CSGO to be easily played and ported to Engine 2. If a solution is found, Source 2 will happen. And now…not.”
While this issue may hinder development for the time being, the game will probably still be ported to the Source 2 engine in the future. That is if the community content issue is resolved.
