Weeks before that, a lot of people doubted Liquid’s true ability after the boys became the best team in the world. Now, those doubters are dwindling.
Liquid took down Astralis, but most people still think that the Danish team’s loss of first place is mainly due to not playing much, not because Liquid has improved. While somewhat true for a short time, Liquid proved the opposite, and even the Astralis boys had to accept the truth.
Recently, Liquid brought North America the ESL Pro League Season 9 trophy and the journey to that success was not easy. Liquid must beat Tyloo, HellRaisers, MIBR, Astralis, mousesports and G2 in order to lift the trophy. That win means the North American team needs just one more Intel championship to claim the $1 million Intel Grand Slam prize pool.
Before their success at ESL Pro League Season 9, Liquid won DreamHack Masters Dallas 2019, runner-up cs_summit 4 and champion IEM Sydney 2019. A great start to 2019.
However, maintaining the number one position is often a much more difficult goal. Creating the next dynasty is seen as Liquid’s next challenge. The boys will soon have a chance to confirm this as ESL One Cologne is only a few days away, and then the StarLadder Major in Berlin.
A stunning victory at ESL One Cologne will create a new era for Liquid and if they can follow through with a Major title, the team will go down in history, joining Cloud9 as the second North American team to win a Major.
Liquid has the ability to do just that. Their top opponents are still familiar teams, but recent head-to-head results suggest that Liquid can subdue these names. However, the Counter-Strike Cathedral (Cologne) and the Major will offer a completely different gameplay. If Liquid can’t be at their peak, they may soon leave the throne right before Liquid’s era begins.
