Blizzard says Diablo 4 is only the first chapter

It’s only been a few weeks since Blizzard officially announced Diablo 4, but fans have been wondering how long the game’s plot will take place – in the sequel and after. Diablo 4 game director, Luis Barriga, and art director, John Mueller, just spoke with AusGamers about the future of the Diablo 4 franchise.

The first Diablo 4 trailer reveals the main villain, the evil Lilith: she is the daughter of Mephisto and the queen of the Succubi. Mueller and Barriga talk about how to make Lilith the villain, and what Diablo 4’s new storyline means for the series as a whole.

When Mueller, Barriga, and the development team found Lilith (in the story of the game), they were “inspired” and wanted to build Diablo 4’s story around her. At first, everyone knew that making Diablo the sole villain had happened so many times, so the team decided not to bring the character back right away. Instead, Blizzard “changed the formula”. The Diablo team explores novels and legendary stories to find a new angle to the story.

In the process, they found a direction for the Diablo franchise. As Mueller points out, “Diablo IV is like the first chapter of the book. We want to tell a big story and we want to tell it for a long time. Considering it’s the first chapter of the book and Lilith being the key character in this story, it’s great to know we’ll have all the other characters that could return in the future. Or, new characters we haven’t seen before.”

During the interview, Mueller and Barriga also shared a bit about Diablo 4 development and the open world of Sanctuary – this will be a vast world with no screensavers. To do that, the team looked at their favorite open-world games, and “not just RPGs,” to see how it translates into Diablo 4. “The game will feature five continents in the world and you can go from north, the far north of Scosglen, as we saw in the demo, all the way to the Dry Steppes and into the desert of Kejhistan,” says Mueller. “That’s the level of detail we wanted to add when creating the game world.”

Other than that, we don’t know much more about the game’s plot and ending process – which is “still undecided.”

Diablo 4 is currently in development for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
