Developer Automaton has officially announced the game Mavericks: Proving Grounds. The studio believes that this will be a breakthrough battle royale title in the popular battle royale series. Mavericks, formerly known as Project X, dropped a short trailer during a livestream over the weekend, but further information about the game is currently scarce. However, Automaton hopes it will be enough to attract players.
The biggest news we know from Mavericks is that the game will have a 400-player battle royale mode, with teams of 4. A 100-player solo mode is also being planned for later, which Automaton calls “phase 1”. Phase 2 will push the game further, creating a large RPG environment that can support up to 1000 players.
More people means more action and entertainment, but having “400 players” is enough to get us excited. But it’s clear that there’s more to Mavericks than just the amount of people that can be involved in a match.
What will determine Mavericks’ success will be the changes to the current battle royale formula, which are essential for the player base to grow. According to Automaton, Mavericks will step away from the “shrink arena” structure used by games like Fortnite and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. With rounds, current battle royale games limit the player’s range of movement and make the match more intense, ending faster.
While Automaton still has a vague description of their plans to change the battle royale formula, the studio has given us a few hints. Mavericks will feature multiple obstacles and objectives on a single map, keeping the plan to keep players separate while still encouraging teams to clash. These obstacles include environmental elements that the character can interact with, including explosive elements, but details are not mentioned.
Phase 1 of Mavericks: Proving Grounds is scheduled to launch later this year. Those interested in the game can sign up for the mailing list through the website’s official website, which includes details about the beta. Phase 2 includes MMO elements, slated for release in 2019.
