Ubisoft Entertainment SA sued Apple and Google, accusing them of selling clones of the popular game “Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege”.
“Area F2”, created by Alibaba Group Holdings Ltd., is a “near 100% parody” of Rainbow Six: Siege, and this is without question. Ubisoft says it has filed an application in federal court in Los Angeles.
According to piracy lawsuit information from Ubisoft, Rainbow Six: Siege, or R6S, has 55 million players worldwide and over 3 million daily players. R6S is also esports, with professional and semi-pro teams competing for millions of dollars in prize money.
“R6S is one of the world’s most popular competitive multiplayer games, and one of Ubisoft’s most valuable intellectual properties,” the French company said. “Nearly everything about AF2 was copied from the R6S, from the character select screen to the scoreboard, and everything in there.”
A Google representative would not comment on the current lawsuit. Alibaba and Apple also did not respond when asked for comment.
Rainbow Six is based on Clancy’s novel series about counter-terrorism squads and “Ubisoft’s competitors are constantly trying to capitalize on the popularity of R6S, and to attract attention, as well as money, from the game side. player R6S.”
Alibaba acquired Ejoy in 2017 to increase its presence in mobile and online games. Ejoy began promoting Area F2 in the US late last year via YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. The game was available to download on mobile and tablet last month.
Ubisoft said it informed Apple and Google that Area F2 infringed on copyright, but the two companies refused to remove the game from Google Play and the Apple App.
