How does Rotation work in Hearthstone?

By now most people know about rotation but just in case let’s take a look at how it works in Hearthstone. If your friends don’t understand rotation well, send them this link to avoid giving them wrong information.

• Sets rotate once a year.
• Basic and Classic will always be in Standard and will not rotate.
• Standard mode is only available for sets released in the last 2 years. (2018 = 2017 and 2018 sets)
• The time when the sets are rotated will coincide with the release of the first expansion.
• The first set of the year also marks the new name of that year “The Zodiac of Hearthstone”. (Mammoth, Kraken)

This information is subject to change, but any changes listed will be introduced before the new rotation begins. Let’s take a look at the history of rotations.

Year of Kraken

• Start with the Whispers of the Old Gods version.
• Curse of Naxxarmas, and Goblin vs Gnomes become Wild.
• Reward and Promotional sets have been removed

Year of Mammoth

• Start with Journey to Un’Goro.
• Blackrock Mountain, The Grand Tournament, and The League of Explorers become Wild.
• Some cards from Classic and Basic have been moved to the Hall of Fame set, and can only be used in Wilds.

2018 (currently untitled)

• Start with the first expansion of 2018
• Whispers of the Old Gods, One Night in Karazhan, and Mean Streets of Gadgetzan will become Wild.
• There’s a chance we’ll see a few individual cards rotated, but there’s no word yet to confirm this.
• In Standard will be the sets: Basic, Classic, Journey to Un’Goro, Knights of the Frozen Throne, Kobolds and Catacombs, and Set1-2018.

Ben Brode will take away deck slots

It should be emphasized that this has not happened yet, but with what we are seeing about rotation and being talked about all over the web, the chances of it happening are very high! Especially since deck slots are added at a time when the rotation has not been announced yet.
