Since the Battle Fury was remade, it’s become an extremely effective weapon, and we’re not taking into account the cleave’s splash damage. Pro players have started buying it for Phantom Lancer, separate from the normal build. Then RTZ builds Battle Fury for Terrorblade at Galaxy battles. It’s time to discuss when this item became so powerful in the current meta.
HISTORY OF BUFF BATTLE FURY
The effectiveness of Battle Fury today has to do with the Dota 1 era, when it was an item that was often built by Windrunner. It can compete with Orchid in Windrunner’s build. Actually, Battle Fury’s Cleave doesn’t really give ranged heroes an advantage.
Battle Fury has been buffed since the dawn of Dota. From its birth to 6.84, damage increased (from 55 to 65), and item cost decreased (total reduced from 5100 to 4575 gold), cleave range increased (from 160 to 280! ) and the ability to heal is also greatly increased. After 6.84 happened, the damage was slightly reduced while it incorporated the Quelling Blade into part of the build recipe, making it a farming tool for carries.
But at the time, it was just the main item of two heroes: Anti-Mage and Ember Spirit. This item later appeared in Juggernaut’s build, and was at one point a support for Faceless Void when the hero was still a hard carry. Despite getting a little buff, Battle Fury continues to need more.
Patch 7.00 further increases Cleave’s damage and range. Then, in 7.02, 7.03 and 7.07, Battle Fury received two more buffs to turn it from situational item up to core in-game. Cleave’s damage increased from 35% to 40%, and range increased from 280 to 330, and range from 520 to 575. Although the damage was reduced by 5, the cost of the item decreased from 4500 to 4100. Battle Fury still too good.
BATTLE FURY ON BABY AND LONG-HANDED GENERALS
Shadows and ranged heroes get no benefit from cleave. Theoretically, if a hero like Specter gets on Fury, it’s quite a disadvantage, when compared to items like Radiance or Diffusal Blade – which can be combined with Specter’s Ultimate. And it’s even worse with Terrorblade, champions who love items that increase the stats of their shadows. However, Battle Fury is still bought by pros, on heroes like Specter, Terrorblade, and Phantom Lander. This item is so good that its Cleave effect becomes unnecessary.
Dota has so many rules, systems, and basic builds that it makes it difficult to be open to new ideas, if it affects the meta. Would we ever seriously dare to take Mjolnir on Anti-Mage if the pros didn’t get on it first? Positioning 1 Faceless Void on Linken’s Sphere first was deemed inappropriate, even though Wing’s carry is Shadow, which helped make this build shine at TI6.
Currently, +45 damage and +6 heal for 4100 gold, Battle Fury is the most cost effective damage item, except Divine Rapier. And of course, it increases your farm so much, that Fury can compete with items that can be combined with his hero’s moves. Fury is similar to Meepo getting on Dragon Lance just to get stats, even though they don’t increase attack range at all.
In the past, Battle Fury was a game-specific item, but with a few buffs, now, Fury is very suitable for the current meta farm. The active play of the trilane gave the carry more time to farm, and the Demon Edge was the replacement item in the recipe that made Battle Fury easier to buy in secret shops. It can become a movement, as players realize the potential of the item and test it on multiple heroes, the same way they did with Mask of Maddness and Skaadi.
So where else do we see Battle Fury? It also appears on Legion Commander, Chaos Knight, Slark and even Lifestealer. Fnatic.EternaLEnVy also just upgraded to Fury for Monkey King at ESL One Getning. Given the way this item has become a trend in recent patches, we’d be quite surprised if Battle Fury doesn’t get nerfed a bit. For the time being, it looks like Battle Fury will continue to be an item of the current meta.
