World War Z’s developer Saber Interactive is surprised by the high sales on the Epic Games Store. The game has sold 250,000 copies, lauded for last weekend’s record sales.

World War Z had more than 1 million players in its opening week, representing a quarter of Epic’s revenue. Saber Interactive’s CEO Matthew Karch said his game is also relatively successful outside of the US region.

“Overall, the US and Europe have equally high sales. We have 70,000 concurrent players across all platforms, spread across PC (Epic Games Store), PS4 and Xbox,” Karch said. “What surprised us was that there were more non-US sales in the Epic Store, when the US accounted for only a quarter of sales.”

Despite lackluster reviews at launch, the third-person co-op shooter edged out The Division 2 to take the top spot at UK retail. The game is inspired by the famous movie and novel to provide a Human vs Human vs Zombie experience.

The PC version of the game is exclusive to the Epic Games Store, and Karch commended the Epic Games Store for driving sales.

“On PC, we’ve exceeded expectations like this thanks to the support we’ve had from the Epic Games Store,” Karch said.

Epic Store will stop exclusivity if Steam changes its profit sharing method

Metro Exodus also has a similar story to Epic. The game sold 2.5 times more than its predecessor (on Steam), despite facing exclusivity controversy. Although there are no statistics to confirm this, the developers seem to be satisfied with the Epic Games Store.

However, that does not mean that World War Z has no further plans. In the near future, Saber will improve the game’s stability and add special missions to the Tokyo part. Its long-term goal is to grow its community, add new content, and continue to improve.

On PC, the team is still working on fixing crashes, problems with the friends list and corrupted save files. On April 20th, the new patch improved Vulkan’s performance and stability, balanced AI for bots, and buffed the Slasher perk.
