Through its data analysis, Newzoo has made some pretty solid predictions for the esports scene in the coming years. According to the report, Newzoo predicts the esports market to reach $1.7 billion by 2021. In addition, this data analytics firm also talked about their predictions for the esports industry 3 years ago.
Many predictions made by Newzoo in 2017 have come true. These include esports revenue that will hit $465 million in 2017 – the actual figure is $655 million. Newzoo also projected esports revenue to surpass WWE’s (American wrestling show) revenue, and this happened as well.
Newzoo says this trend will continue until 2021, when esports will transform the video game market into a larger industry than traditional sports.
“By 2021, we predict the global gaming market will generate $180.1 billion in revenue and esports is what drives this, with a lot of brands investing in esports to appeal to younger people. As more companies join and consumers spend more time watching esports content than just competing, esports will greatly help the global gaming industry grow.”
Newzoo doesn’t say esports will overtake traditional sports on its own, but it will boost support for the gaming industry.
Notably, Newzoo says the term “esports” is slowly disappearing. As esports became more popular, fans and outsiders simply used game titles like League of Legends or Overwatch to talk about what they were watching. Therefore, the next tournament of Dota 2 will be called a Dota 2 tournament, not an esports tournament.
“While the term will never die out, we predict that by 2021 it will be used a lot less,” predicts Newzoo.
Let’s come back in 3 years to see if Newzoo’s predictions come true.
