Why will the Steam Deck succeed over other handheld PCs?

While not the first handheld PC Gaming on the market, the Steam Deck will certainly be the most successful.

Why will the Steam Deck succeed over other handheld PCs?

Last week, Valve Corporation launched the Steam Deck, a handheld PC for gaming. Unlike the Nintendo Switch OLED, which is disappointing many people – Steam Deck promises to be a huge success.

So, what is the reason for this success?

As noted above, the Steam Deck is not the first Handheld PC. More specifically, there are already products on the market such as GPD Win 3, Aya Neo and OneXPlayer. However, these products are not known to the vast majority of gamers because the companies that produce them are not well known.

From left to right: OneXPlayer, Aya Neo and GPD WIN 3.

On the other hand, Steam is a name that almost goes hand in hand with PC Gaming. So Steam Deck will be trusted by more people.

The Steam Deck starts at $400 for the standard version and $650 for the premium version (512GB NVMe SSD). Meanwhile, other products have prices ranging from 700 USD to 1000 USD.

The reason the Steam Deck has a more affordable price than its competitors is because behind it is Valve Corporation. Meanwhile, the makers of GPD Win 3, Aya Neo and OneXPlayer are all in the form of Kickstarter. That means they depend on the contribution of gamers who are interested in the project and cannot sell cheaply because there is no mass production line.

Why will the Steam Deck succeed over other handheld PCs?

While the Steam Deck can install the Epic Store, the Steam Store is still the preferred distributor.

In a recent interview, Valve president Gabe Newell said that the Steam Deck’s price point is “painful”. Show that the selling price of the product can make little or no profit for Valve.

However, Valve can still earn back revenue after a long time through the Steam Store. Steam Deck owners are more likely to buy games on the Steam Store, and as such, Valve has created loyal customers with every Steam Deck machine sold.

In recent years, the “Console War” game platform war is actually dying with many gamers owning 2-3 different systems at the same time.

However, one thing that cannot be denied is that owning a “war” PC to play games will be quite complicated. Not only buying a CPU, gamers also have to buy a mouse, keyboard, monitor… Meanwhile, console players just need to buy the machine they like, plug it into the TV and enjoy.

The existence of the Steam Deck solved this problem. For gamers who play games on console as primary and PC as secondary, Steam Deck is all they need.

Thus, the Steam Deck has solved two problems, a compact handheld game console and a PC platform that does not require a lot of investment.
