What is the difference between the Nintendo Switch OLED and the Nintendo Switch V2?

As rumors circulated before, Nintendo has launched a new Switch version with the name Switch OLED. This is the fourth model in the Switch lineup, since the 2017 V1 release.

The current Switch family includes the Switch V1 (discontinued production), Switch Lite, Switch V2 and most recently Switch OLED. Compare the display capabilities of Switch OLED and Switch V2

As its name suggests, the new model is equipped with an OLED display, marking the biggest and most useful upgrade over the LCD screens of previous models. The screen is also bigger, 7″ compared to 6.2″ before. (Switch Lite has 5.5′” screen)

Changing to OLED means a lot of improvement in the contrast ratio compared to the previous generation, the black array will be ‘true’ black, bright colors will be displayed more accurately. The reason for this is OLED – using organic light-emitting diodes that will give light on their own, instead of having to shine behind the LED panel, so they can show a ‘true’ dark on each point smallest image.

Eg: For LCDs that filter light through the backlight, only a small part of the light passes through, so true black cannot be displayed. As for OLEDs, they display black simply by not emitting light, not consuming power, so black will be ‘true’ black.

OLED technology is also not too strange when some phones and TVs have switched to OLED panels, for example Apple changed to OLED from the iPhone 12 series. The lighting ability will also be higher than 320nits on the panel. LCD of Switch V2.

Despite the larger screen size, the Switch OLED still skips the upgrade to 1080p Full HD, keeping the same 1280×720 resolution. The pixel density of OLED is 209ppi, lower than Switch V2’s 236ppi but not significantly. The 720p HD resolution also means better battery life than the 1080p display.

When docking and connecting to a TV, Switch OLED will output a 1080p image like V2. Some players are looking forward to 4K but unfortunately we will have to wait a bit longer.

Design of Nintendo Switch OLED and Switch V2

The design of the Switch OLED is almost identical to its predecessors, with an attached display screen and a pair of detachable Joy-con controllers. The familiar black back, the two sides of the neon red and blue handles are also back, only adding a white version.

Fortunately, the previously thick screen border has been thinned, giving it a more modern, sleek feel.

Thinner bezels for a larger screen make the Switch OLED almost the same size as the Switch V2. The two are only about 0.33cm apart in length, you can still use the old Joy-con you bought before completely normally.

On the back, Nintendo has redesigned the tilt-adjustable stand to help the OLED Switch stand more firmly, with more viewing angles.

Capacity, processor and battery life between Switch OLED, Switch V2

The internal capacity is doubled: from 32GB to 64GB, you also have an additional microSD card slot to expand the memory as you like, supporting up to 2TB. Nintendo says the OLED machine will have the same 4.5-9 hour battery life as the previous Switch V2, although using a different screen.

In terms of performance, there are no changes compared to V2. The Nintendo Switch OLED will use the same Nvidia Custom Tegra processor and RAM as its brother V2. So, no matter how the game runs on Switch V2, the OLED will still be the same, only the contrast is improved, so it displays better image colors.

Compare Dock of OLED and Switch V2

As you probably already know, this new version will have both the Dock and the white machine and is also the only version that is completely white. If you are not a fan of white, don’t worry because there are still red and blue Neon colors and black Dock.

The size of the OLED Dock is also slightly larger than the Dock V2, but not significantly. The edges are rounded, making the dock look more delicate and harmonious.

Unlike V2, the new Dock version, the rear USB port is replaced by an Ethernet LAN Port – a wired LAN port, so you can connect to the network without Wi-Fi in TV mode.

In addition to the above small changes, all the remaining features of both are the same, you can use the OLED Dock for V2 and Dock V2 for OLED devices.

Price of Switch OLED and Switch V2

The OLED version is on sale for $ 350 in the US on October 8, 2021, $ 50 higher than the current basic Switch V2. However, as expected, the number of units sold will be quite limited and scarce, similar to the Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5 when it was released last fall.
