Find out what an M2 SSD is and how to install an SSD on a PS5!
What is SSD M2?
SSD M2 or M.2 SSD is the new generation of high-speed hard drive device of SSD. If SSDs usually limit the speed to 550MB/s, with M2, the transfer speed can be increased many times, so M2 SSD is the first choice for storage and transmission.
Currently, there are 2 types of M2 SSDs including M2 SATA SSD with 550MB/s speed and M2 PCle SSD with transfer speed up to 3500MB/s.
What SSD does the PS5 use?
As you probably already know, the PS5 supports an M2 SSD slot so that users can download and install many PS4, PS5 games without being constrained or limited by the internal memory of the device. However, you should note that not all SSDs can be inserted. See now what type of SSD that PS5 can use is M2 SSD!
Note: Currently only updated machines system version 2.0-04.000.00 Only the M2 SSD slot can be used.
Details of SSDs that can be used for PS5
Display: NVMe SSD M2 PCIe Gen4 x4
Capacity: 250GB – 4TB
Cooling structure: Installing an SSD into the PS5 will require efficient dissipation with a cooling structure, such as a heatsink system. You can add cooling accessories to one or two PS5 surfaces yourself. There are also some SSDs with built-in cooling systems or special cooling structures.
Reading speed: Minimum 5,500MB/s or more.
Module Width: 22mm (does not support 25mm)
Official coefficient: M2 types 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110. These numbers are often listed with other information. The first two numbers for the width, the rest for the length.
Slot type: Socket 3 (Slot M)
Total dimensions including cooling structure: less than 110mm (L) x 25mm (W) x 11.25mm (H). Which includes
- Length: supports 30mm, 42mm, 60mm, 80mm and 110mm sizes.
- Width: 20mm.
- High: both SSD size and cooling structure should not exceed 8mm.
- Supports both single-sided and double-sided.
- M2 SATA SSD is not supported.
- Sony does not guarantee that all M2 SSD devices that meet the specifications described will work properly on PS5.
- Not all games achieve maximum performance when playing on the M2 SSD like the built-in SSD.
- Most M2 SSDs that meet the size requirement can fit in the PS5’s SSD slot. However, some M2 SSDs will have a special, unusual design, so be careful when choosing to buy.
Why should PS5 mount an SSD?
Almost all AAA games today apply many technologies to be able to show the most realistic graphics power, so the capacity of the game has also increased many times. If a few years ago 250GB was more than enough to install all games, some games now even go up to 150GB.
Therefore, if you do not want to constantly try to finish to delete the game, it is extremely necessary to equip an SSD.
How to install M2 SSD for PS5
Once you know what an M2 SSD is and which PS5 uses, it’s time to install it. Before you start, you need to prepare:
- Table top or flat floor, spacious enough.
- #1 Phillips screwdriver or cross screw.
- Illuminator (optional)
This feature is currently only available to those who have upgraded to system version 2.0-04.00. If you installed the SSD without upgrading, you will need to remove it to upgrade!
Before starting the process of installing the SSD, stand in an insulated location, removing anything static around. Otherwise, your PS5 or SSD may be damaged.
If you already have version 2.0-04.000.00 and want to revert to the previous version, you must remove the SSD before going back. Rolling back to an older version without removing the SSD may result in a system failure.
Note: Do not turn on or use the machine with the case removed.
If this is your first time installing the M2 SSD on your PS5, you will need to reformat the SSD after you install it. All data on the SSD will be completely erased and cannot be restored, be sure to back up the necessary data first.
Do not turn off the machine while saving data or when the SSD is formatting. This can cause data, system or even damage to the PS5 and M2 SSD.
Do not use the M2 SSD without a heat-dissipating mechanism, such as a heatsink or heatsink. M2 SSDs must come with them or you must purchase them separately.
Steps to install SSD for PS5
- To enter Settings > System > System Software > Console Information to check the current system version.
- Hold the power button for 3 seconds to turn off the PS5, then remove all cables and devices connected to the PS5. Wait for a while for the device to cool down.
