In an HLTV interview from the ESG Tour Mykonos, Gabriel “FalleN” Toledo talks about SK’s quarterfinal exit from DreamHack Masters Malmö, his journey in Greece, and shares his plans for the rest of the year. 2017.
SK made it to the playoffs at the ESG Tour Mykonos by winning Group A, beating mousesports in Inferno after a 5-14 comeback, and beating Gambit 16-12 at Overpass.
After reaching the semi-finals, Gabriel “FalleN” Toledo gave an interview about Malmö, previous pre-matches, and the promise of the rest of 2017.
Let’s talk about Malmö, when the team lost to G2, what caused the team to lose? What’s difficult when you fight them?
I think G2’s playstyle is a bit more proactive, for example, they rotate more than the other teams on CT. But at the Battle of Malmö, I thought I had won. We ‘throw’, it was 15-10 to us and we made a few mistakes. Of course, it wasn’t just the Banana push that cost me, but also the other mistakes that followed.
And I think it was a worthy loss, the preparation for the Malmö tournament was not the best. That loss was like… prepare mentally the way you prepared for the match, prepare the best, because it’s important. If we won Malmö, maybe we’d be ‘Okay, we can keep doing what we’re doing, it works,’ but we lost. And this time we come back stronger, and I think in this tournament we are showing a good level of play and we are very excited for the future.
Let’s talk about mistakes, is there anything you would like to elaborate on after Malmö?
There is much to learn from Malmö. Starting with North’s game, we made a few changes, we decided to change the way we play a bit. When we played against G2, I think some of the bugs that we knew well before, started showing up in that game.
Here in Mykonos, the team started with a 5-14 comeback against mousesports, tell me about this entry and the mentality you mentioned above. Twitter after the match.
The match against mousesports was really tough, they won both pistol rounds, we had a couple of chances to win the force-buy on T and change that, but we still couldn’t finish those rounds. We didn’t give up any points in this match, we understood that we could come back, we knew that our T-side in Inferno was pretty strong.
Everything started to go into the mold, I think SK had a lucky moment or two, where TACO bombed B when there were only 5 or 10 seconds left in smoke, that was super important. And there was round when fer and I killed oskar in round 15-13, oskar saw me and fer finished him off. Of course, Cour-Strike is that kind of game, sometimes it’s yours, but you don’t think it’s just luck. There was a lot of preparation and we did a good job beating them.
The situation you mentioned in round 13-15 with oskar, did you know oskar was there at that time, or did you just think that fer covered you already?
I don’t think people will believe us, if I say lucky, they think everything is planned; And if I say I have a plan, they think we’re lucky. It’s up to you, you can think what you want, planned or lucky, we are SK and you all know our level.
The match against Gambit was also mentioned by him on Twitter, which he had been waiting for quite a while. First, why did you enjoy playing against them, and now that you’ve played, what are your thoughts?
Gambit is a great team, it’s amazing to see how quickly they have improved. As I said on Twitter, it reminds me of my team in 2015, the growth of the team and when things started to go our way, we started to learn and get better and better and win. several tournaments. And then Gambit won the Major, which, like us, seemed funny, because they had good results when not clashing with us. And this seems to be the same for us against fnatic in the past, fnatic didn’t play SK, we started well, won Majors, won a few tournaments and we didn’t play fnatic.
This time, Gambit has to play against the best team in the world and it’s great to play against them, they are good players, have a good mix, and fitch is the right piece for Gambit. I’m just excited to play them, because every time we play against them, I don’t think I’ve lost recently, it’s always been a good game. They played proactively, tried their best, and we overcame them.
The summer journey, when he won all five tournaments, started with cs_summit, it is perhaps not difficult to see the ESG Tour Mykonos as a similar opportunity for him. He’s no longer in poor form when felps first entered, but could this be an opportunity to regain confidence for the rest of the year?
Yes, we use this tournament to regain confidence. I don’t want to say that this is an ‘easy’ tournament, it’s not easy, and summit isn’t easy. People say summit is an easy tournament to play, but that’s not true, there are a lot of strong teams out there.
We have good teams in this tournament, VP is in good form in the group stage, we have Liquid, you have Gambit, the team that just won the Major and are doing really well, so this tournament is also quite difficult. . Besides, the atmosphere in Greece is quite friendly and cool at this tournament, we want to win. And we want to use this tournament to regain confidence and correct the mistakes of the team.
In the end, the team will have a long journey that includes a lot of tournaments throughout the summer, mostly staying in Europe for the time being. Is it the same this time, do you have similar plans for the rest of 2017?
When we returned from vacation, we knew we had 9 tournaments to attend. We finished 1 tournament, we didn’t win; and now we joke that, if we don’t win at least 5 cups, there won’t be any vacation until the end of the year. Therefore, we have 8 tournaments left and at least 5 cups belong to us.”
