Just before the new year, Valve has revealed the hottest names on Steam in 2021. The “Steam Best” summary is divided into categories such as best sellers, most played and new releases, early access graduation, best VR, and controller support. The summary provides some insight into the titles that have been successful with PC players over the past year. Besides the big names, some indie developers also leave a deep impression with their products.
Viking theme game Valheim is one of the prime examples. The indie game from developer Iron Gate has reached “platinum” on Steam’s list of 100 best-selling games (measured by total revenue), alongside giants like CS: GO, PUBG, Dota 2, Grand Theft Auto DRAW, Rainbow Six Siege and Apex Legends. Valheim also earned the top spot in Steam’s 2021 most-played category, after achieving a peak online co-player count of over 200,000. According to SteamDB, the game peaked with over half a million concurrent players in February.
Other blockbusters on Steam in 2021 are also available New World, Amazon Games’ rookie MMORPG. The game entered the same three platinum categories and achieved 913,634 online players as of early October. Dead by Daylight also went platinum of the best-selling category, while in new releases: Age of Empires VI, Farming Simulator 22, Forza Horizon 5 and Resident Evil Village are both at the top of this year.
Early Access Graduation Category (also calculated by gross sales) includes action-adventure survival game Subnautica: Below Zero, World War II shooter Hell Let Loose, fun and chaotic fighting game Totally Accurate Battle Simulator and survival horror FPS GTFO among many others.
