We often have to clean the case periodically to look clean and ensure the durability of the internal components. But you also need to consider, if cleaning too often, it will be troublesome and increase the risk of damaging components.

That’s why I wrote this article to share some dust control experience, hopefully it will be useful to you.

Note: Your case must have a fan

Your case without a fan cannot control the flow of air in it. Without controlling the flow of air, you are also helpless with dust in the air. So having a fan to circulate air is a prerequisite for you to apply 2 of the 3 tips below.

Choose a case with a dust filter and don’t sweep the filter too often

The dust filter is simple, but it still has a very clear effect. These curtains will keep dirt, dog and cat hair, pieces of garbage, insect carcasses… back. Although not 100% clean, the level of effectiveness is easily visible.

But I note that you guys do not sweep the dust filter too often. In my experience, this layer of dust will act as a finer filter to prevent small dust particles that the case’s filter cannot retain. When you see that the filter is too thick and starts to obstruct the air flow a lot, then sweep it later.

Set up the fan so that the pressure in the case is greater than the outside

A case with a filter is one thing, but whether or not the air will pass through that membrane is another. Air can enter your case through many paths, not just through the air intakes with dust filters. For example, from the ventilation holes under the case, the PCIe slots on the case, the openings of the case …

And what you need to do now is to catch the air only entering the case through the dust filter and out by the remaining lines. To do this, the pressure in your case must be greater than the outside air pressure, which is positive pressure.

In order to have positive pressure, you must ensure that the number of fans that draw air into the case must be more than the fan that discharges air from the inside of the case. You need to remember that the exhaust fans must draw air through the dust filter, so the flow will definitely decrease, not stay the same as the exhaust fan, so a slightly larger suction / discharge ratio will be better. For example, 2 suction / 1 discharge, 3 suction / 1 discharge, 5 suction / 2 discharge … and so on.

Always keep the case on high

The floor is where the dust settles. Current case models often have a power compartment underneath. The fan of the source will draw air from under the case, so if your floor is dusty, the power unit will eat enough. Also, the case’s dust filter can’t be 100% dust-proof, so you should put it up high anyway so it doesn’t “breathe” more dust.
