Aghanim’s Shard from Aghanim’s Labyrinth has been featured in the official Dota gameplay. Aghanim’s Shard has its own special effect (upgrade or add new skills) for every hero in the game, making the complexity and choice in the game much more diverse. Aghanim’s Shard is a very interesting concept and works very similarly to Aghanim’s Scepter but at a third the price (compared to the green stick, we have to spend another 2000 gold).
Below the article will list the top 10 heroes that will enjoy the most benefits when on it. However, it does not give the same stats as the green stick. Not to mention, Aghanim’s Shard doesn’t take up any inventory. Deciding which item to build becomes even more difficult for supports when gold should be something of an abundance for them. Therefore, having an additional investment option of only 1400 helps support a lot more.
1. Bane (6.5/10)
Fiends’ Grip (Upgrade) – Fiend’s Grip now casts an uncontrollable illusion that also channels Fiend’s Grip on the target. Illusion takes 750% damage and dies instantly if channel is interrupted.
This isn’t a bad upgrade from Aghanim’s Shard, it ensures the Fiend’s Grip continues even when Bane has a channel interruption. In case no one is there, it allows Bane to ignore the Channel and use other skills while leaving the illusion channel Fiend’s Grip for him. But it wasn’t a priority item for Bane because it didn’t upgrade the skill’s effect. We might not need Aghanim’s Shard if we’d picked a better position and that’s why Bane is the last hero in this top 10.
2. Earthshaker (7/10)
Fissure (Upgrade) – Reduces Fissure cooldown by 2 seconds and allows you to move on it. When casting the spell, the aftershock effect applies to the entire Fissure.
Upgraded Fissure guarantees a 3.25 second stun, thanks to Aftershock affecting those near Fissure. Going on Fissure sounds great, but it doesn’t get this ES to the top 10 because Blink and Aghanim’s Scepter are so much better for him. Aghanim’s Shard is not very superior to what the other two items bring.
3. Nyx Assassin (7/10)
Vendetta (Upgrade) – Causes Vendetta’s attacks to reduce magic resistance by 20% for 4 seconds. Also increases Vendetta’s movement speed by 40%, unlocking top speed.
Increases Nyx’s ability to chase or escape by gaining 40% more movement speed. Vendetta damage is now pure, so even if magic resistance is deducted before Vendetta damage occurs, it will not increase Vendetta’s damage. But the other two skills of Nyx will benefit and if you are one of those who like to go to Dagon, Aghanim’s Shard will help a lot. Also, it will be beneficial if your team has heroes that specialize in magic damage, like Leshrac, Lina or Puck. Nyx is not a good farmer as a support. Meanwhile, Blink or Spirit Vessel is still usually the better first item. So, Aghanim’s Shard will still have to wait for the team’s snowball speed before going on it.
4. Skywrath Mage (7/10)
Ancient Seal (Upgrade) – Ancient Seal debuff now makes other debuffs last 40% more. Shows the target’s vision.
Skywrath must prioritize Rod of Atos as the first item, but Aghanim’s Shard can be the second choice if the game requires it. With the Level 15 Talent, Ancient Seal has no cooldown and Aghanim’s Shard can gain vision on enemies during combat, and also increase the duration of debuffs such as stuns. But because Skywrath is pretty papery, that means the hero should prioritize Glimmer Cape or Eul’s to save himself over a 1400 gold item that doesn’t add any stats.
5. Disruptor (7.5/10)
Thunder Strike (Upgrade) – Allows Thunder Strike to cast on allies, following them and dealing damage around them. Every 1s buff buff grants 50% movement speed and +75 attack speed (recoil distance is every 2 seconds). Increases radius to 160 when cast on allies.
Disruptor is a great support for remote play, and this hero’s Aghanim’s Shard is no exception. In case the team is leading or even with the opponent, this Shard is a strong buff for carries like Alchemist, Bristleback, Phantom Assassins, Specter or Sven, who like to rush in and punch the opponent. Movement speed and attack speed buffs a lot, and with the +3 Thunder Strike talent, it ensures allies are buffed 7 times total. In case the team is cornered, this Shard is not much help and it is better to build an item to save you.
6. Witchdoctor (8/10)
Voodoo Switcheroo (New Skill) – Turns you into a Death Ward for 2 seconds. Deathward has -30 attack speed. You are hidden/invulnerable for the time being. Cooldown: 70. Manacost: 250.
Voodoo Switcheroo guarantees 1715 damage at level 3 with 2 seconds of Deathward (before being reduced by armor). Ward shoots 7 hits during that time and CANNOT be stopped by anything in the game – including Black Hole, Global Silence! And if the Witch Doctor has a green stick (which is very rare in the game), this Ward will also jump between enemies like a regular Death Ward. This is a cheaper option than a green club and is a prime example of a successful shot.
7. Bounty Hunter (8.5/10)
Track (Upgrade) – Allies now gain 50% Track Speed. Grants sight of 600 units of target to your team. (updated according to the latest 7.28a update)
Visibility is one of the most important things about Dota 2 and 600 vision around the subject has to be said very large. The previous track gave the target optical vision, but it was removed in Dota 2 patch 6.85 because it was too strong. Slardar’s Corrosive Haze also suffered a similar situation in Dota 2 patch 6.86. That shows how important AoE visibility around the target is, especially when the subject knows they are being tracked. With Bounty Hunter position 4 or 5, this is a very valuable Aghanim’s Shard, and that’s not counting 50% of the Track Speed for the whole team.
8. Keeper of the light (October 9)
Illuminate (Upgrade) – Illumate heals allies for 40% of its damage during the day.
Regenerating 200 health every 11 seconds (faster if cooldown is reduced from Chakra Magic) is a powerful tool in teamfight, but is even more beneficial in pushing turrets and eating Roshan. This skill ensures that the team always has enough health to tank the turret and 1400 gold is really not too expensive for a hero that can clear creep waves or neutral stacks easily with Illuminate.
10. Enigma (10/10)
Black Hole – Black Hole now pulls enemies (no costn segments) to its center at 1200 AoE (pulling speed 175 units per second).
This is probably the best Aghanim’s Shard for a support hero. The Black Hole’s radius effect is 420, so the Shard almost triples that number! While heroes can still cast spells while being dragged in, they’ll probably focus on running away from the Black Hole before being sucked into the center of gravity. If standing on the edge of the Black Hole Shard (which means it can still cast spells), it is only 390 units away from the real Black Hole. So, if the hero stands on the edge and doesn’t try to run away, he will be stuck in the real Black Hole for 2 seconds. With Black Hole lasting 4 seconds (0.5 second aura added after next effect), this should be a pretty big disable for heroes standing in the Black Hole Shard. Not to mention, Enigma is one of the fastest farm supports in the game, making it pretty easy to build, even if it’s behind Blink and BKB. Aghanim’s Shard really puts Enigma at the top of the top 10 most effective heroes when building this item.
Names worth mentioning
Crystal Maiden
Frostbite (Upgrade) – Reduces Frostbite cooldown by 1 second and allows it to be cast on yourself, reducing damage taken by 70% for this duration. Allows Frostbite to be cast while channeling as long as the object is within cast range.
Although not in the top 10 heroes above, this Shard would be more interesting if it could be cast on all allies to reduce damage, but if so then it is too strong, Aghanim’s Shard is not a priority item for position 5 Crystal Maiden. But position 4 Crystal Maiden is given more farm, like the way Yapzor plays, this item will be a good choice after Blink and BKB, to make sure the hero doesn’t die during Freezing Field.
Rubick
Telekinesis (Upgrade) – Allows you to cast Telekinesis on yourself or an ally. Throw range is 60% longer and cooldown reduced by 30% when targeting an ally. Throw delay reduced to 0.5 seconds.
Turns Telekinesis into an effective save, with a longer throw range, that can be used to save cores from low to higher positions or hills, as well as save from Roshan pits. However, despite the 30% cooldown reduction, it still renders Telekinesis useless for a 15.4 second cooldown and takes away Rubick’s disable during that time.
The top 10 heroes above are just initial impressions when going to Aghanim’s Shard. There are a few other names like Oracle and Shadow Demon that are also worthy of this item, but we have many other items worth investing in more gold. People need to wait a few more weeks to know exactly which Aghanim’s Shard really works and which doesn’t.
