Steam has a new king – Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. The FPS game has surpassed Dota 2 in the past 4 months as recorded from Steam Charts. But why do the numbers of Dota 2 drop?
While CSGO’s esports system may seem less invested than Dota 2, CSGO has done something never seen before: consistently beat its MOBA brother in terms of active players. There are many reasons for this, but here are the key points.
Counter-Strike finally launches a new operation
Operation Shattered Web launching on CSGO server is a good sign for the game that has not been updated with new content for a long time.
Although Danger Zone has partly quenched the thirst, Shattered Web has released new skins, maps and challenges after more than two years. With the return of the new operation, the general player group also returns.
CSGO hit a record of more than 777,000 concurrent players. This is the highest number this FPS game has ever had, and is also in the top concurrent players of a game on Steam.
Dota’s new patch is not well received by the community
The latest Dota 2 patch is probably the most controversial update. Adding two new heroes, a neutral item, and a bunch of balance changes, left a lot of players unsatisfied.
If you look through the recent reviews of Dota 2, you will recognize the problem. After the new patch was released, the number of negative reviews of the game increased dramatically. 11,923 negative reviews in just one month. This is the most negative reviews in a month that Dota has ever received.
However, this number is still inferior to Dota 2’s 27,043 positive reviews in the same month. Despite receiving many negative reviews, in general, Dota still maintains a stable rate of 80% positive reviews.
FPS games are getting more and more prominent
In the top 10 Steam games, 5 of them are considered shooters, with 4 FPS games being CSGO, PUBG, Rainbow Six Siege, Destiny 2, and (temporarily seen as FPS) Grand Theft Auto V. shows that the days when the Steam top 10 was dominated by free and strategy games is over.
With CSGO overtaking Dota 2, maybe it’s time for Valve to rethink CS’ esports strategy, perhaps giving this FPS game its own The International.
