The plot of Resident Evil 2 Remake will not be the same as the original

Many believe that the Resident Evil 2 remake will be faithful to the experience that the original created. However, when this project appeared at E3 2018, including 12-minute gameplay, we soon realized the game would not be exactly like the original. In addition, Capcom branch director Mike Lunn also said, Resident Evil 2 remake will allow players to interact with the characters and surroundings more, compared to the original.

During his talk with Gaming Bolt, Lunn was asked about a previous comment made by Capcom that the Resident Evil 2 remake would have a more “in-depth” storyline, specifically any changes in the game that affect the game. The plot is good, it’s just the exterior. Lunn replied, “Both”, partly indicating that the Resident Evil 2 remake’s plot will have a different plot from the original.

Lunn continued, “For example, there will be places in the original, that you just pass by, or the characters you talk to have only a few sentences. Now, things will be more in-depth. Sometimes you can really explore it longer. Sometimes you will have a more cohesive story with someone. They will be more involved than before. The plot will definitely be enhanced, but I can’t be more specific for obvious reasons.”

In a previous interview, Lunn explained Capcom decided not to promote the project as a remake. He explained that the changes to the puzzle as well as the rare ammunition would create a new experience for fans, but who are already too familiar with the original.

However, this remake will take inspiration from the original, with the plot, setting and atmosphere being preserved. Capcom also confirmed that one of the game’s iconic monsters, the mutant alligator, will return. Resident Evil 2 producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi confirmed to Polygon at E3 2018 that he wants to appeal to old fans as well as honor the franchise’s history.

With a famous brand like Resident Evil, creating a new experience for new fans as well as potential fans will not be an easy job for the Capcom team. But what we have witnessed at this E3 2018 shows that Capcom can absolutely do it.

Resident Evil 2 is slated to release on January 25, 2019 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
