Once you are attached to a game, you will really immerse yourself and absorb every detail that the developer puts into the plot.
A good game will touch the emotions of gamers. In the process of discovering the plot, sometimes you will have to witness sad scenes, the heroic sacrifice of a certain character. Whether they are the main character or the supporting character.
Often scenes like this will make gamers extremely heartbroken. It is not just a person who has passed away, but sometimes it will be extremely emotional moments. Because that character is inherently too attached to the player, until “hands down” immediately leaves boundless grief. Here is part 2: The noble sacrifices make gamers cry.
Aerith – Final Fantasy VII
There are many people who have never played FF7 but still know the anecdote, telling about the heartbreaking death of Aerith.
Benefiting from the huge advancements that came with the PS1’s release, the superb graphics (at the time) along with the iconic soundtrack by Nobuo Uematsu made for a legendary Final Fantasy VII. Until nearly 25 years later, there are still memories that echo in the memories of gamers. The more popular FF7 is, the more people feel sorry for Aerith’s death.
Sephiroth’s ruthless act towards the sweet, kind florist with whom the player spent 20 hours befriending, will surely be etched in the player’s heart.
Bruno – Broken Sword 3: The Sleeping Dragon
Bruno’s death is the best proof that just a moment of glory can save the life of a terrible “dead” game.
Broken Sword 3: The Sleeping Dragon is not a good game. The controls are quite strange, the puzzles are difficult to answer, the content and context are difficult to understand… all have made the game experience like taking a tooth.
But luckily, because Bruno and the guy’s death in the game touched emotions and saved the game. Bruno decided to give up his life in exchange for an escape route for his companions.
“I’m not ready to die, but I’m ready to die” – Although he is an imperfect person, Bruno’s farewell words have touched the hearts of many gamers. Especially those who always yearn for a chance to correct their mistakes.
Jackie Welles – Cyberpunk 2077
Jackie’s light of life may have gone out, but it lit up the beginning of Cyberpunk in the darkest night, when people were starting to get bored because the game had so many bugs. Jackie Welles acts as the main character’s best friend. His loyalty and determination to reform himself have made him a notable figure in the chaotic world of Cyberpunk. And his early departure from the world was more shocking than the fans.
At the end of Act One, Jackie is mortally wounded during a burglary. When he and the player were on the run in desperation, Jackie lost too much blood, eventually collapsing despite finding a safe place.
The final conversation of the protagonist and Jackie became a strong emotional highlight. The feeling when a man is about to reach the top of his dream but can’t move on is heartbreaking, and made even more broken by the voice acting of the veteran actors. Goodbye Jackie.
Kurisu – Steins;Gate 0
Steins;Gate 0 is a prequel to Steins;Gate, arguably the most popular novel of the decade. Steins;Gate 0 begins with the climax of the first game, when the protagonist Okabe accidentally hits Makise Kurisu, his lover, while attempting to stab her killer.
Let’s review the Steins;Gate story across 2 timelines. In the first timeline, Kurisu always dies, while in the second timeline, Okabe’s best friend Mayuri dies instead of Kurisu.
What happens next is Okabe’s desperate attempt to track down Steins;Gate – a third timeline where neither of them have to die.
Okabe will most likely be in the timeline where Kurisu was killed, desperate for failed attempts to save her. But in the second half of the game, Kurisu will arrive in the timeline where his friend dies and Kurisu lives. However, Kurisu scolds him for being irresponsible for leaving her friend alone, saying that their reunion should now only be a good dream, because where he lived she died. Kurisu gave Okabe the courage to go back to the main timeline, face the fact that she was gone, and try to live on.
This is the saddest moment of all the Steins;Gate games, and it’s also a moment that hurts just thinking about it. Perhaps gamers who are indifferent to reality should experience this feeling once to understand and appreciate what they have more.
Zack – Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
The Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII game part uses an interesting mechanism that is the Digital Mind Wave system. In a word, the main character will recall a moment or a certain person in the past to energize himself.
This system acts like a random camera. When Zack has 10 “Soldier Points”, it will turn to images of the characters that Zack has met and befriended in the game. If 3 of the same images are drawn, Zack will perform a special move or “buff” for some advantage.
During the final battle of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, the “slot machine” begins to fail as Zack becomes more and more overwhelmed by an endless attack by the Shinra army. At that point, Zack’s consciousness fades and his memories begin to fade. Until he was about to die, the “slot machine” rotated one last time, and the last image he saw before he died was the silhouette of his girlfriend Aerith.
Maybe Zack’s death isn’t as famous as Aerith’s. But the scene looking at Aerith one last time before Zack’s departure is still enough to make the player feel pity for a sad love.
