Nintendo Switch has surpassed PS1.
According to the most advanced estimates from VGChartz, international sales of the Nintendo Switch have surpassed that of Sony’s first PlayStation console (also known as the PS1 or PSX). Switch has sold 341,662 units as of January 15, 2022, bringing total sales to 102.81 million units since the console’s release. This also means that Nintendo Switch officially surpassed 102.5 million units of Sony’s PlayStation 1 shipped and jumped to the 5th position in the history of console sales. It is worth mentioning that Switch sales include combined sales of the newly launched Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED.
The next potential of the Switch is Sony’s Play Station 4 which is ranked 4th (116.58 million units) in the worldwide console sales chart, followed by the Nintendo Game Boy (including Nintendo Switch). including the Color Boy game), currently selling 13.77 million units. Next is the Nintendo DS, and the best-selling console on earth is Sony’s PS2, with total sales of about 158 million units.
Breaking down Switch product sales, this console has sold 34.67 million units in the US, 27.22 million in Europe, and 23.43 million in the Japanese version. Further analysis of Nintendo Switch figures in Europe shows that it has sold 5.21 million units in the UK, 6.11 million in France and 5.93 million in Germany. The Nintendo Switch was released internationally on March 3, 2017, while the PS1 was launched in the Japanese version on December 3, 1994.
Switch sales should have been higher but due to worldwide chip shortage, intendo was forced to revise down its own Switch console sales forecast. The reason lies in the uncertainties related to the emerging pandemic and the lack of electronic components throughout the international market.
In the third quarter of this year, Nintendo sold about 3.83 million Switch units. For comparison in one of those past years, product sales were 6.86 million units. In total, since the time the device appeared on the market, sales have reached 92.87 million units with many different versions (Switch and Switch Lite).
