An Illinois lawmaker (USA) is currently looking for a way to ban all titles violent game by amending the 2012 law, which prohibits retailers from selling violent games to minors. In the documents filed, Representative Marcus C. Evans argued that violent video games are strongly linked to an increase in robberies and violent crime in Chicago.
This measure calls for a ban on the sale of all violent games in the state. According to the bill’s definition, a violent video game is described as a game that “allows a user or player to control a character in a video game that encourages violence between people, in which the player kills or causes serious acts or psychological harm to another person or animal.”
In addition, car theft is also classified as acts of “serious physical harm” in the bill. The rate of car thefts has increased dramatically in Chicago, with 218 cases reported to the police in January alone. Those who sell or rent violent games will face fines of up to $1,000. Many gamers are quite bewildered because if the bill is passed, gamers in this state will have a lot more difficulty if they want to experience their favorite action and shooting games.
In 2020, the American Psychological Association (APA) shared that there is little evidence that ‘violent games and violent behaviors have a causal relationship’. APA President Sandra L.Shullman also wrote in the report: “Violence is a complex social issue that can stem from many factors that need attention from researchers, policymakers and the public.” So the claim that the game causes an increase in crime does not seem convincing enough.
