Negligee: Love Stories, the first uncovered adult title on Steam, was approved for release last week. Since then, many countries have banned this ‘sexy’ adventure game. In response, developer Dharker Studios said they “cannot release the game in places where it is prohibited”, and now the game has been banned in 28 countries.
According to details from the Steam Community page, Dhaker Studios said the game must comply with the laws of the country and “these restrictions are inadequate when making the first adult game on Steam.”
The article reads: “Many countries ban this game making us realize that we cannot circumvent the law. You can think whatever you want, but Dharker Studios Ltd as a company, if we’re releasing a game in a country where the content is considered illegal or possibly illegal, chances are we may be affected.
“If they penalize or target steam under our agreement with steam, we (Dharker Studios) will bear all costs and damages, which could end our company, as we are still the development team. indie is small and doesn’t have a lot of resources to take care of those expenses while developing the game.”
Dhaker said it had to be careful and said that people living in banned countries can buy Negligee: Love Stories in other ways. The full list of banned countries includes:
- Japan
- Malaysia
- Botswana
- Egypt
- Morocco
- Nigeria
- South Africa
- Sudan
- Uganda
- Bangladesh
- China
- Lebanon
- Korea
- Pakistan
- Saudi Arabia
- Turkmenistan
- Belarus
- Iceland
- Ukraine
- Russia
- Australia
- Papua New Guinea
- Indonesia
- Guyana
- Iraq
- UAE
- UIE
- Virtue
Dhaker also mentioned the intention to ‘censor’ Negligee: Love Stories – something they’re not ready for at this point.
“In the past, most games had storylines and adult content was added in the main storyline,” the developer said. “Makes it easy to cover them without affecting the quality of the game. That’s why all past studio games were not restricted to countries as adult content was removed from the game..
“But with Negligee: Love Stories it is different, the story of the game revolves around adult issues in both content and style from beginning to end of the game. If we cover this game so everyone can play, it means more than 90% of the game content will be lost, unfortunately this is not the way for this game. However, we will find a way to make the ‘censored’ version as well as other versions so that it is not affected by the bans, but at the moment we are not ready to release games like that.”
Dharker concluded by suggesting future titles “will be developed to release more ‘censored’ versions where possible and then add free or low-cost adult DLC.”
