On December 31, right before the New Year, Bethesda tweeted a cryptic message on the official Twitter account of Elder Scrolls with the content: “Record the past and map the future. Have a happy new year!”. The tweet may seem like just a year-end wish by standards, but the first part that deals with the past and future leaves fans wondering if there’s anything else behind it.
There are a few theories surrounding the meaning of the above tweet. A lot of Redditors agree that the third candle represents the “future” which is a sign that The Elder Scrolls 6 will take place in Hammerfell, home of the Redguards. But the first candle is surprising because it does not appear on the map at all, but is located on the northern sea. Skyrim – probably used to refer to the appearance of the Atmorans. However, the candle is also on a box, and no one has been able to decipher its meaning.
On Twitter, fans seem more interested in the coins in the upper corner of the image and the time on the map: 4E 182 (a few years before the events of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim). This detail has led to some speculation that the next Elder Scrolls game will be quite closely linked with the final one. Some people think that the tweet is definitely not related The Elder Scrolls Online (the game is set in the middle of the Second Era, centuries before the era in the Elder Scrolls RPGs).
Bethesda’s “Happy New Year” tweet was most likely just an ordinary wish and the predictions above make no sense. Even so, fans are still excited to discuss theories because Bethesda has revealed almost no more information about The Elder Scrolls 6 since announcing the project in 2018.
