The Division team may be developing a Battle Royale game for Ubisoft

Rumor has it that The Division team Massive Entertainment is developing a new game for the Battle Royale genre. There are no further details other than that this project has a very low development time.

This rumor was spread by Game Reactor. They confirmed that Ubisoft approached Swedish studio Massive earlier this year with a request to learn about Battle Royale games. After researching, Massive said they can make a new game in a fairly quick time, and may launch later this year.

Battle Royale is one of the hottest game genres right now, with Fortnite and PUBG constantly appearing on social media and streaming platforms with record viewership. But each battle royale game has a different approach to the game, and they are all successful to many degrees.

With Massive Entertainment, they already have the foundation to make Battle Royale games with what they learned from The Division: a good shooting system and flexible and impressive game technology. The Division’s survival mode, which challenges players to survive the cold and plague, as well as enemies, has many similarities with Battle Royale, from loot aspects to PvP. More importantly, The Division already has large maps available and it’s easy to convert it to a battle royale setting.

That’s just an assumption if Massive really wants to use the platform of The Division to apply it to Battle Royale. There are many things in The Division that are perfectly suited to battle royale: maps, loot/crafting systems, graphics tech, and other things that other battle royale games don’t have like skill/point systems.

But predictions will be nothing if this rumor is not accurate. There is currently no information confirming the authenticity of this source and everything is a rumor. Massive is currently very busy with many projects, including the recently announced The Division 2 game.

But this is not necessarily out of reach for Ubisoft if they want to expand their market share to battle royale. If the company focuses a full studio on, then this is entirely possible.
