Kazunori Yamauchi is a veteran director and co-creator of Gran Turismo and also the face of the developer Polyphony Digital. The director is making his own plans for Polyphony Digital in the journey to develop Gran Turismo. Yamauchi revealed that he wants to create more Gran Turismo games: “I plan to continue developing the Gran Turismo brand associated with the auto industry and car culture in the future. At the same time, I also wanted to do something different.”
Yamauchi went on to share that video game makers have long aspired to make their children digital copies of the real world. However, the player doesn’t need the real thing to have real feelings or sensations. The director gave an example of how the digital environment can recreate moments and experiences that are no longer possible in the real world.
Yamauchi revealed a little about his childhood: “In the 1970s, the foothills and flat land, like Totoro’s world, expanded in my hometown, Kashiwa city. Because I love collecting insects and climbing mountains, when I was a kid, I used to spend all day in the forest or playing in the river. Today, however, this is hardly possible in Japan. So why not create a virtual version of nature and bring into this world the complexity, harshness of real life and other elements of surprise. This is what I am imagining.”
The bad news is Gran Turismo 7 has been pushed back to 2022 and has no official release date yet.
