Steam continues its annual tradition: it announces the top 100 best-selling games of 2018. The “Top Sellers” list doesn’t specify sales, but divides them into categories by sales volume. This year, we have 12 games that make it to Steam’s “Platinum” tier, Steam’s best-selling titles. This year’s Top 2018 does not have many unexpected names.
Note that Steam’s Top Sellers isn’t just limited to games released in 2018, it counts total revenue earned for the year. As a result, many of this year’s Top Sellers titles were successful thanks to DLC and microtransactions. The list also doesn’t rank each game separately, but rather groups them into the same category, randomly shuffling each time you visit the page. Here is a list of Top Sellers games:
Perhaps the most interesting thing about this Top Sellers list is that only three games in the Platinum tier were actually released in 2018: Far Cry 5, Monster Hunter World and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Also, but sadly, there are no titles on this list without DLC or microtransactions.
Under Platinum, we have 12 more games under the Gold tier. Two of them came out in 2018: Kingdom Come Deliverance and Jurassic World: Evolution. Again, all games in this tier have DLC or microtransactions. However, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Divinity: Original Sin 2 don’t have too much DLC/Microtransaction. Additionally, online games and MMOs including Dead by Daylight, Path of Exile, and Black Desert Online continue to be successful.
Moving to the Silver section, we begin to see unique titles. For example, indie productions like Raft, Subnautica, The Forest, and Frostpunk are all in the Siver category. Then there is the Bronze tier – the last 60 games on the list – which includes a variety of indie and AAA titles, singleplayer and multiplayer, new and old. The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is still on the list.
