Tencent intends to bring the Steam-like WeGame game store to the world

When tech mogul Tencent renamed their online game store ‘WeGame’ last year, many wondered if Tencent intended to compete with Steam? Now this answer has the answer. Tencent will launch the international version of WeGame soon.

According to a report from the South China Morning Post, the international version of the gaming and social networking platform – currently exclusive to China – will open in Hong Kong. This segment is designed to reach users outside of China, and promote Chinese games to the world.

“The Hong Kong version of WeGame is currently in development,” a Tencent representative told the Morning Post. “This will be for foreign users, and we will use the platform to bring Chinese games to the global market.”

According to the South China Morning Post, WeGame has 220 downloadable titles. These include games developed overseas, like Don’t Starve Together – which reportedly sold over two million copies on WeGame as of April of the year.

Although the number of games seems limited, but Tencent owns the Riot Games studio with the game League of Legends and the mobile game company Supercell. In addition, Tencent also holds stakes in Epic, Activision Blizzard, Robot Entertainment and many other studios. Total revenue for the 2016 fiscal year totaled $22 billion.

But as we already know, Valve and Perfect World have brought Steam to China, but WeGame still doesn’t have an official launch date in the international market.
