Just a few months ago, every time Techies appeared in the game, everyone was bored. Be careful not to step on mines, then always have to have sentry ready, don’t know when you will die when pushing high ground, etc. But everything has changed in Dota 2 update 7.31.
The rework has removed two old Techies skills, Statis Trap, Remote Mines. Instead, the new Teches has Sticky Bomb and Reactive Tazer. Teches rework patch 7.31 becomes a more team fight hero than disappearing on the map.
Sticky Bomb is quite interesting skill. Sticky bomb prioritizes heroes, and it cannot be destroyed like Proximity Mines. So once the bomb is caught, damage will definitely happen unless the hero can escape with Blink, Dispersion or Eul’s (Cyclone activated). This is a skill that deals effective damage in lane as well as a good last hit. Sticky Bomb also pairs well with Proximity Mines to push lanes and farm neutrals, especially stack neutrals. At level 7, the combo of two skills deals a total of 740 damage, while the cooldown is not too long.
The Reactive Tazer is less impressive. Reactive Tazer when combined with Blast Off will silence and disarm many enemy heroes, but it is difficult to properly align. It takes 6 seconds to explode, and it’s not easy to keep targets close together for long. However, the skill is easier to execute with Aghanim’s Shard, as enemies stunned by Blast Off will have a hard time avoiding disarm. Reactive Tazer is much stronger when it lands on the green stick (Aghanim’s Scepter) because it can be cast on allies, and then also deals damage. However, we need to invest 4200 gold to get the green club and this gold is not always easy to get in every game.
In the first week, Techies rework made a big impression in pubs and the hero was buffed in patch 7.31b of Dota 2.
After patch 7.31 came out, the Techies pick rate increased dramatically, but the win rate dropped quite a bit, and this is not surprising. The regular Techies player (with years of experience in farming direction and hero movement) knows exactly where to place Remote Mines, or knows the Statis Trap combo with Proximity Mines to gain an advantage. But when update 7.31b came out, the win rate returned to almost the same as before. Right now, it’s around 46-48%. The still high pick rate shows two things: One is that players are more willing to pick Techies and the other is that the hero is less likely to get banned in-game.
One of the strongest buffs of update 7.31b is that Blast Off’s self damage changed from max HP (max HP) to current HP (current HP). Blast Off no longer causes Techies to kill themselves (changed in update 7.31), making it more risky to use it with low health. Previously, at least the enemy wouldn’t eat gold and xp from killing Techies. But between updates 7.31 and 7.31b, if low health Techies cast Blast Off on an enemy hero, Techies won’t have much health left, not to mention being very close to the enemy, making getting killed a sure thing. . For now, Blast Off won’t do much damage to Techies.
GO LANE
According to statistics from Dotabuff, more than 60% of Techies games go offlane. Position 3 or 4 is probably the best role for the hero with position 4 becoming more and more popular.
UP SKILL
The most popular Skill Build for Techies rework starts with Blast Off, maxes out Sticky Bomb at level 7 and gets Reactive Tazer at level 11. Deals 360 nuke damage (270 to heroes due to 25% magic resistance) with a cooldown of only 6 Seconds are great for team fights, as well as farming. At level 10, a hero with Sticky Bomb, Blast Off and Proximity Mines combo will take a total of 1260 magic damage, which is quite a large number at the beginning of the game. For that reason, Techies leveling up quickly will have a better advantage in the mid-game.
Both skill builds below have the same highest win rate. They only differ in which talent is chosen.
TALENT
Level 10: Both level 10 talents have the same pick rate. 20% Magic Resistance not only resists magic damage from enemies, but also reduces damage to yourself from Blast Off. Minus the 3 second cooldown for Proximity Mines reduces the cooldown for skills by 20% at level 3, and it helps Techies to place more mines (potentially increase mines by 25%)
Level 15: At level 15 it’s more obvious. +200 Blast Off damage always selected!
Level 20: In this talent, the -15 second Blast Off cooldown is slightly better than +125 Sticky Bomb’s grip/explosion radius. The reason for this may be that most Techies players choose the Blast Off talent at level 15, and the 15 second drop in level 20 talent will complement the Blast Off skill in general. But increasing Sticky Bomb’s cling radius also ensures that the bomb will find its target easier.
Level 25: At level 25, the -0.8 second Proximity Mines activation delay is preferred, as it reduces the activation delay to 0.2 seconds. That means Techies that stun enemies with Blast Off (Aghanim’s Shard) will have enough time to unleash one or two Proximity Mines on the stunned enemy. +252 damage is like an extra talent for fun, but maybe we’ll have a Techies build in physical damage in the future?
ITEM BUILD
1. Soul Ring: Since Techies have up to 4 skills that can be used, the amount of mana consumed will definitely be high. Soul Ring somewhat solves the problem of lack of mana in the early and mid game.
2. Aether Lens to Octarine Core: Great item for Techies, which increases the range of three of the four skills (all but Reactive Tazer). It can be upgraded to an Octarine Core later, increasing the durability and reducing the cooldown of four skills by 25%.
3. Kaya to Ethereal Blade: Ethereal Blade is now one of the most purchased items by Techies. The new Ethereal Blade adds the spell amplification (thanks to Kaya) and it’s an easy way to increase damage while activating Ether Blast (which both slows enemies and reduces magic resistance).
In addition, Techies can build items depending on the match situation such as Eul’s, Force Staff, Eternal Shroud or Bloodstone.
All in all, Techies has been reborn and patch 7.31 has completely changed the way the hero plays. Although it is still too early to accurately assess Techies, the ability to contribute to team fights has partly helped Techies not be estranged from the community as much as before.
