Most of the day, the noise coming from the PC is not a problem, because it is drowned out by the sounds of life. However, when the night returned to the quiet of the street, the noise level of the PC began to become annoying. For example, when I go, around 1 a.m. and I don’t wear headphones, 7 fans and 2 HDDs in the case sound like a jet. To fix that, I found the following 5 ways, hopefully it will also help solve your PC noise problem.

Ventilation fans in the case are what I want to mention first because they usually account for the most number and also often contribute the largest amount of noise.

Regarding how to control the number of rpm, the PC case ventilation fan can be divided into 2 main types: normal fan and PWM fan. The normal type can’t adjust the speed by software, so it will only run at 1 speed, no matter how loud it spins, it’s noisy. And if it can be adjusted, it can only be adjusted manually by adjusting the fan hub, and you can’t remove the case cover just to adjust it forever.

PWM type and will spin fast or slow depending on component temperature so it will make your PC less noisy at low load. In addition, you can customize with software to achieve the level of heat dissipation/noise performance you desire. One more information for those of you who don’t know, most fans on PC heatsinks, from the cornices like the stock Intel heatsinks to the fans on Noctua’s genuine heatsinks, are all PWM, and so are the water pumps.

As for the reason why I say that you should use the largest fan possible, it is because if the design of the propeller is the same, the large fans will rewind slower than the small ones. From there, to handle the same amount of heat, the large fan will spin slower and less noisy than the small fan.

There are several lines of air coolers that are optimized to help keep the PC quiet, the most recognizable feature is that they have a very large fan and heatsink. The most typical radiator that I see is the Noctua NH – D15, its maximum noise level is only 24.6 dB, it must be said to be quiet. Such powerful and quiet radiators, in addition to being low-noise, also help your PWM fans run slower and more efficiently, thereby enhancing the quietness of your PC.

For those of you who use a water cooler, I have a note that always keep the pump-block assembly lower than the highest point of the water rad. The reason is because there is always air in the radiator. If you let the pump-block assembly be the highest point of the radiator, the air will get into it, the pump impeller will beat the air, creating a murmur and reducing the efficiency of the pump. In addition, it also causes the pump-block assembly to vibrate more, vibrate to your components as well.

If my friends have hot coals, the first question I ask will be about the cleanliness of the machine, regardless of whether it’s a desktop or a laptop. That’s because dust can affect the heat dissipation efficiency of the machine quite a lot, making the fan spin harder to handle the same amount of heat and then make the machine noisier.

When clinging to the propeller, dust will reduce the fan’s aerodynamic efficiency. When clinging to the heatsink (the heatsink fins), it will hinder the heat exchange of the radiator and the air. When too much is closed to the filter, dust will obstruct the air circulation. All of which will make your computer hotter and noisier. So if you hate noise, it’s best to make sure your rig is always clean.

One more thing is that if you haven’t changed the thermal paste for 1-2 years, you can think about changing the thermal paste for the CPU. Maybe it will help the heat sink work more efficiently, the CPU will be less hot and the fan will also be less spinning.

This one is quite effective but a bit cumbersome. Egg sucking is used in most studios and many studios. Its purpose is sound absorption and echo cancellation. You can also use it to help reduce the noise of your PC when the night comes and the surrounding space begins to become quiet. Actually, I have not used sucking eggs yet, I just use a flat folding carton, but I’m sure sucking eggs will be more effective.

You just need to cut a piece of egg foam a little bigger than the PC case and put it between you and the PC box. For example, my PC case is located behind the screen. When I put the carton between the screen and the PC case, the noise level is reduced. If you suck on chicken eggs, it will be even more delicious. If the sponge is too soft, taking it out is difficult, you can stick a piece of carton behind to make it hard, remember to point the egg foam towards the case to absorb sound.

Undervolt can help your CPU, GPU reduce power consumption, thereby lowering to 5-10 degrees easily. Basically, this is a voltage reduction trick, reducing the amount of power the chip has to reduce the heat output. From there, the fan and heatsink will also run smoother. If done correctly, it not only does not reduce performance, but also helps your CPU and GPU stay cooler, and the machine runs smoother. In addition, if your PC consumes less power, the power fan will also run at lower rpm and quieter.

HDD is a mechanical hard drive, its magnetic disk is always spinning and making noise, although not loud but still enough to be heard. To solve it completely, you can switch to using SSD.

However, if you have used HDD, then you have your purpose. Maybe you don’t have the money to upgrade or intentionally use the HDD in parallel with the SSD to get the large file capacity like me. But if you have such a purpose, then you have accepted the noise of the HDD, there is no reason to give up the HDD and spend money to buy an SSD just for a little noise.

However, I think this advice will be suitable for those of you who are using HDD and intend to move to full SSD. Now that SSDs are fast and durable, you’ve got another reason to do it.

Some case lines are optimized to reduce the noise level to the lowest level, which can be called a silent case. Those of you who go to build machines can prioritize choosing these cases to play games at night. If you do not know which model is quieter, you can consult a consultant at the store or consult online. However, the case is only a part, the machine running smoothly or not depends on a lot of factors that I mentioned above, so please pay attention to optimize.
