Successfully running GTA 5 on the 33-year-old Game Boy system

A modder showed how he was able to play GTA 5 on the Game Boy.

If you’ve ever wondered what one of today’s biggest games would look like on a 30-year-old console, you’re in luck. A modder showed how he was able to play Rockstar’s open-world blockbuster – Grand Theft Auto 5 running on the Nintendo Game Boy released in 1989 – 33 years ago.

This feat was accomplished by Sebastian Staacks, a programmer as well as the owner of a well-known technology blog on the internet. To be able to help a game as heavy as GTA 5 run on such an ancient console, Staacks first created the WiFi Game Boy – in the form of a game card. The WiFi Game Boy is inserted into the Nintendo Game Boy like other Game Boy titles, and then allows it to receive a WiFi signal. Although Staacks calls it “one of the most useless things I’ve ever made,” it’s pretty impressive.

A few weeks after creating the WiFi Game Boy, Staacks had an idea in mind when using it to help his 33-year-old Nintendo Game Boy play modern games. To avoid misunderstanding, although Staacks is playing GTA 5 on the Nintendo Game Boy, the GTA 5 game itself is not running on the Game Boy. Instead, it was run on his PlayStation and transmitted to the Game Boy over a Wi-Fi network. Staacks then presses buttons on the Game Boy that sends the input back to the PlayStation, allowing him to control GTA 5 on his own Game Boy.

Game Boy is Nintendo’s legendary handheld game console, released in North America on July 31, 1989.
