Game developers are getting access to Steam Cloud Play – a new feature Valve plans to integrate directly into your Steam library, similar to GeForce Now: Let users play PC games they already own through via cloud platform. As documentation from the service shows, developers will eventually take advantage of cloud servers “hosted by Valve”. However, the company says the process is still quite lengthy.
“At the moment, Steam Cloud Beta only supports Nvidia GeForce Now,” Valve’s Nathaiel Blue shared. “Steam users in North America, Eastern Europe, and the Pacific can download the Nvidia GeForce Now client and play their supported games on Steam. This past Wednesday, we updated the documentation and emailed a small group of developers with details on joining the program. We’re working with Nvidia to make this experience as smooth as possible for players and developers.”
Blue added that “we’re testing more ways for customers to play games from their Steam library. On this side, we need to exploit the game in the cloud through Steam. However, we have no further announcements for the time being, the team is expanding more Steam Cloud partners in the near future.”
Now, users can access the game remotely by connecting your device via Steam Remote Play, but for the cloud platform, the game will run on Valve’s server. According to Valve, they are wanting developers to stream their games, but it seems unlikely that will happen anytime soon.
According to the document, Valve has no intention of selling differentiated games in the cloud. Developers are still paid in the traditional way, as “Steam Cloud Play simply gives Steam users more choices about where and how to play their PC games. It is similar to a user playing a game from his Steam library through Steam Remote Play or on another computer.
