Spiritfarer – Super toxic game for gamers to play the role of a ferryman to send souls across the river

First announced at E3 2019, Spiritfarer from the development team Thunder Lotus is one of the indie games that are most noticed by gamers when it comes to exploiting the theme of death and the afterlife. The game takes players on the emotional journey of Stella – who is tasked with befriending the spirits and guiding them to the afterlife.

Inspired by the Greek myth of Charon, a ferryman on the River Styx and Acheron, tasked with bringing the souls of the dead to hell – where Hades ruled. If they can’t cross the river, these souls will have to wander in the world forever without escaping. It sounds scary and tragic, but the world of Spiritfarer is extremely serene and peaceful. Players must grow vegetables, mine, cook, … to keep the souls happy during their journey. Each soul will have its own personality and appearance, even animal souls such as lions, deer, frogs, etc.

In addition, Spiritfarer also supports co-op mode, the second player will play Daffodil – Stella’s cat. The 2D graphic style is reminiscent of Ghibli’s Spirited Away animation style. Each soul has a wish to fulfill and Stella is the one who helps them fulfill it before going to the realm of bliss.

The world around Stella is colorful with melodious music that brings comfort and soothes the wounded soul. Spiritfarer will take players on a beautiful journey when sending souls to the afterlife. For those interested, the game is out now for PC, PS4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One.​
