Sony has allowed PSN renaming and here’s how

Just last week, there were rumors from game developers that PlayStation Network was about to launch a renaming feature. While some are skeptical of these anonymous sources, others are excited to hear this feature is coming soon. The ability to edit names on the PSN has long been in great demand.

After that news, Sony now officially announced the PSN renaming feature. The company announced their plans recently, explaining that it will “soon” begin beta PSN Online ID Change. The beta will be open to all members of the PlayStation Preview Program and select those who have pre-registered to test the system’s new software during previous betas.

Beta will end in November 2018, which means the feature will start soon. For all PS4 players, the feature will be fully launched in “early 2019,” Sony said, but an exact date hasn’t been given.

Sony also explains that during the beta phase, testers can change their PSN ID as many times as they want. In addition, you also have the option to show the old PSN ID name along with the new name, but the user cannot decide to display the old name anymore once the name change process is complete. The first change is completely free, but any changes after that cost $9.99 USD ($4.99 for PlayStation Plus subscribers). Testers can revert to their old PSN name “at any time” for free, however this can only be done once.

To change the PSN ID name, you need to go to the menu under Settings or go to your profile page to change it. While changing the PSN name is pretty easy, it doesn’t mean there aren’t problems. Sony warns that the name change feature will be compatible with PS4 games released after April 1, 2018 and that the vast majority of “most played” PS4 games released before that time will be supported (except PS4, PS4, and PS Vita). “Users may sometimes encounter problems or errors in some games” as a result of the name change.

Changing the PSN name is certainly risky – especially for fans of old games – but it is still a well-received feature by many fans.
