GameSpot’s Jimmy Thang spent six minutes playing through a battle in Artifact. Let’s take a look together to see what Valve’s card game will contain.
In a video shot at Valve’s office, Thang is guided through Artifact’s second match by the development team. “The game is similar to Hearthstone,” he said, “but uses heroes from Dota, and incorporates MOBA elements. For example, there are three lanes. You play in order from left to right, and it feels like you’re playing three mini-games at the same time.”
Ladder explains some of the basic mechanics in the game, like the texture system. “Each lane has a turret that you need to destroy, and to win you need to be the first to destroy two turrets. It’s very funny.” The rest of the video focuses on gameplay, including the “Shopping Phase” in the game, with some commentary from the Artifact design team.
It is interesting to know what MOBA features have influenced this game, it could be a factor to attract newcomers to the genre. This video also shows some nice (and fun) graphic effects.
At the beginning of this March, Valve said that Artifact will be focused on esport from the start, with a promising $1 million prize pool in 2019. This announcement suggests that the game will be a competitor to Hearthstone – the current title. Leading the card game series on the game market today.
