Legends of Runeterra, Riot Games’ card game, quickly became the most watched game on Twitch and was praised by many. Before that, some LoL fans found some signs of trademark registration of the game from last year. But in fact, Riot has been experimenting with card games since the company was born – specifically since 9 years ago.
Riot CEO Nicolo Laurent, in an interview last week, was asked which of the company’s new games have been in development for the longest time.
In response to LeStream, Laurent explained that of Riot’s newly announced projects, the card game is probably the longest in development.
“I have to say the first genre the team tried to develop was a card game,” he explains. “We started it very early, but then canceled, then started again… This was the first game we developed… since 2010.”
Here are a few clips from the interview:
Obviously, this does not mean that Legends of Runeterra was actively developed not long after the launch of League of Legends. But it shows that Riot has wanted to develop this idea for a long time, and the company was always thinking about digital card games before Hearthstone became a huge success.
Legends of Runeterra launched on Wednesday as Riot celebrated its 10th anniversary, and Laurent said there are still many new games in development.
“We haven’t released them all yet,” he said. “There are games that are currently in development that are still very new, and are trying to create new genres of games.”
Let’s hope we don’t have to wait 9 years to find out about them.
