Review Days Gone: a positive sign of PS exclusive games coming to PC

Coming to PC after two years of PlayStation 4 exclusivity, Days Gone is Sony’s first game in its strategy of bringing its exclusive game to other platforms.

The third-person shooter survival horror game genre is a very popular game genre. However, what makes Days Gone noticeable is the fact that this is an open world game that combines RPG elements.

The player assumes the role of Deacon St. John, a biker living in Oregon, USA. Two years before the main story takes place, an epidemic has turned half of the US population into bloodthirsty zombies called “Freakers”.

Deacon’s mission in the game is to find his missing wife Sarah. Besides, Days Gone also offers other missions, including finding the truth behind the pandemic. However, the driving force behind our hero is his beloved wife.

As mentioned at the beginning of the article, Days Gone is an open world game set in a large land in the Pacific Northwest of America. The land that Bend Studio allows players to explore is very large with old forests, multi-tiered waterfalls, dusty deserts, small towns and luxury guesthouses.

In Days Gone, the motorcycle is the player’s life and its maintenance is very important. When riding from one place to another, players will consume gas, which means they will have to search for fuel when the tank is empty.

If the car is hit hard or is ambushed by bandits on the road, the player must collect scrap – a game resource – to repair the vehicle. This is a very basic simulation of motorcycle maintenance, but the mechanism makes long-distance trips more enjoyable than just turning on the gas and waiting for it to arrive.

Of course, the game also has a Fast Travel mechanic (provided the player makes sure that the Freakers on the road are cleared and have enough fuel), however we feel that riding to each location will more interesting.

A minus point that can be seen in the exploration array of the game is that besides finding fuel and items to craft, the world of Days Gone has no story to tell. When you enter a rundown house to find loot, you won’t see pieces of paper with notes about the life of the person who lived there like many other games. This makes the world of Days Gone look very lifeless.

In terms of combat gameplay, Days Gone uses a combination of stealth and third-person shooters.

Stealth involves crouching behind bushes or low obstructions, waiting for enemies to pass, then stabbing them in the back. Human enemies will be able to set traps on the map and players will have to be careful if they don’t want to get caught, revealing their location.

In addition, the player can also distract the enemy by throwing stones. In general, the sneak mechanism of Days Gone is not complicated, just “enough to use”.

In case of detection, Days Gone will turn into a third-person shooter game. Days Gone’s arsenal is quite diverse with a full range of guns, from handguns to sniper rifles. However, the shooting array of the game is not really “hands-on” because the sound and visual effects are a bit poor.

The bright spot in Days Gone’s combat mechanism is the melee stage. The movement of the character when launching and hitting is done very well, making the attack feel very powerful.

There are over 150 quests to complete in the game, including the main story line and side quests. If only focusing on the main story, the game can still last up to 35-40 hours of gameplay. This is a good time for the money that gamers spend to buy games.

In terms of performance, Days Gone is well optimized on the PC version. With GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER and Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-9700 Graphics Card, we were able to stay above 60FPS with Very High graphics and 1920×1080 resolution.

One of the points that made Days Gone underestimated when it was on PS4 was that the machine was not powerful enough to maintain continuous frames, so porting to PC is a very beneficial thing for this game.

Overall, although Days Gone has some minus points in terms of gameplay, this is still a game worth experiencing in 2021. The fact that this game is well optimized is also a good sign for upcoming titles. Sony PCs.
