The QuakeCon of the 90s was completely different from today. It used to be a place where fans brought their own computers and rented hotels in Texas and set up LANs just to hang out on weekends. The game’s developer, id Software, wasn’t even involved with QuakeCon at the time: they just heard about the event and decided to attend the final session to find out what it was all about.
Now, QuakeCon is an event hosted by Bethesda. But due to the translation, QuakeCon will be held online. And yet, everyone will get the original Quake on the launcher for free.
If the game doesn’t show up in the Bethesda launcher, log out and then back in. The game only takes 54MB of space to install (in contrast to Warzone’s 200GB). The game runs smoothly, but you need to tweak the controls a bit if you want to play today’s standard WASD. Using the mouse also has to be manually adjusted: type +mlock in the console to turn on the mouse feature.
This may not be the only Quake game that is given away for free at QuakeCon. Bethesda also raises money for charity and if the amount donated to this event reaches $10,000, the company will give away the free Quake 2 game.
QuakeCon at Home is live now and runs until August 9.
