Developer PUBG Corp. stopped suing Fortnite game developer Epic Games. According to Bloomberg, PUBG Corp. withdrew the lawsuit against Epic Games’ attorney and the court in South Korea – the headquarters of parent company PUBG Corp.
PUBG Corp. began litigation with Fortnite in May over copyright infringement. The exact reason for the lawsuit is unknown, but as the PUBG developer has previously stated: they are “concerned that Fortnite may be recreating a well-known experience in PUBG.” The company said it was “concerned” about the interface, gameplay and “mimicking structure” in Fortnite given the similarities between PUBG and Fortnite.
To complicate matters more, Bluehole and Epic have a copyright contract for the Unreal Engine (developed by Epic Games) that PUBG is using. In addition, both companies are partly owned by Chinese conglomerate Tencent.
Epic Games representatives said the company would not comment on the “ongoing litigation”. Representative of PUBG Corp. didn’t say anything either.
In March, PUBG creator Brendan Greene said that Fortnite is helping the Battle Royale genre in general. “It’s good that the Battle Royale space is expanding and Fortnite is having Battle Royale modes that are accessible to a lot of people.” We will continue to update more information when representatives of the two companies speak on this issue.
