Can your computer run PUBG? This question is easy to answer, and fortunately PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has a fairly modest minimum configuration, and of course it only gives the lowest experience. But what does it take to play PUBG at 60fps? Which CPU and graphics card do you need to ensure the smoothest gameplay to win Chicken Dinner? This article will help you get there.
Minimum configuration of PUBG
According to PUBG Corp developer, here’s the bare minimum you need to run PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds on PC. Note that these parameters are higher than before: from Core i3-4340 to Core i5-4430, 6GB of RAM is now 8GB, and instead of GTX 660 now GTX 960.
- Operating system: Windows 7 64 bit, Windows 8.1, Windows 10
- Processor: Intel Core i5-4430 / AMD FX-6300
- Memory: 8 GB RAM
- Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 2GB / AMD Radeon R7 370 2GB
- DirectX: Version 11
- Network: Broadband Internet connection
- Storage: 30GB of free space
Let’s break down the new and old minimum specs a bit. The previously recommended Intel Core i3-4340 is a dual-core CPU from 2013, clocked at 3.6GHz. PUBG can run on a lower-end CPU without 4 cores, giving only minimal performance. But PC Gamer’s detailed performance analyzes suggest that PUBG may be CPU constrained. The new Intel Core i5-4430 minimum requirement is more reasonable.
The graphics card is similar: the GTX 660 was released in 2012, and isn’t exactly powerful enough to run today’s games. Even at the lowest setting, you’ll struggle to get to 30fps.
Recommended configuration of PUBG
Everyone has to admit that the minimum configuration is never a good way to play games, and PUBG is no exception. Here is the configuration you really need to play Battlegrounds.
- Operating system: Windows 10 64 bit
- Processor: AMD Ryzen 5-1600 / Intel Core i5-7600K
- Memory: 8 GB RAM
- Graphics: Nvidia GTX 1060 6GB or better
- (DirectX, Internet connection and capacity unchanged)
Although PUBG runs fine on Windows 7, at this point that operating system is no longer supported for updates. Windows 10 isn’t perfect, but it offers better performance and fixes most of the shortcomings of Windows 8.
On the CPU side, modest processors like AMD Ryzen 5 or Intel Core i5 are more than enough, and when tested with Core i3-8100 or Ryzen 3 1300X 4 cores / 4 threads all run the game well. However, if you also do other things like live streaming then you will need more cores.
It’s worth noting that dual-core CPUs (Celeron/Pentium, and Core i3 early) can struggle, and the lowest frames will appear at the most important moments in the game. So with them you will have more disadvantage than with 4 core CPUs.
Next is the graphics card. What will you need to play PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds 60fps or higher at 1080p? According to PCGamer’s performance analysis statistics, the 1060 3GB model is powerful enough to run PUBG at an average of 60fps with 1080p Ultra settings, and lags as low as 39 fps. At 1080p Medium, however, you’ll average 100fps and never go lower than 60fps.
The previous generation GTX 970 card also fell not too far behind the GTX 1060 3GB, but if you are in need of 60fps, it is better to reduce the setting to low. Even though Early Access is out, PUBG is still in active development. However, don’t expect performance to change in the future. There’s still the problem with the frame cap at 144fps, this needs to go away (and it will, soon). Either way, the GTX 1060 3GB and 6GB will give you the best value for money gameplay.
AMD’s GPU is also good, albeit a bit dated compared to Nvidia’s similarly priced models. Early versions of PUBG favored Nvidia, but the retail release with the latest drivers shows that the RX 570/580 and Vega cards are mostly on par with the GTX 1060/1070/1070 Ti.
