PS5 will say no to the biggest game event of 2020

Sony confirmed not participating E3 two years in a row. In a statement sent to GamesIndustry.biz, the producer PlayStation indicated that they felt “the vision of E3 2020” doesn’t fit the company’s focus this year.

A Sony spokesperson told GamesIndustry that “After a thorough evaluation, SIE (Sony Interactive Entertainment) has decided not to participate in E3 2020. We have great respect for ESA as event organisers, but we do have a lot of respect for ESA as an event organiser, I feel like the vision for E3 2020 is out of line with what we’re interested in this year.”

Instead, Sony will participate in “hundreds of consumer events around the globe”. Sony will likely host a large-scale press conference dedicated to the PlayStation 5’s launch later this year, as well as regular State of Play live streams.

Sony’s decision not to participate in E3 2019 last year caused a stir among publishers like Activision and Electronic Arts have limited their presence in recent years, choosing to forgo their presence in large showrooms. So Sony’s absence is notable – in addition to the company’s first-party offering, which always includes trailers and announcements related to the PC platform.

And in case anyone thinks that another “big” may also withdraw from this annual event, Microsoft has confirmed that it will definitely attend E3 2020.
