The Berserk manga series is one of the most influential stories in the world.
The Berserk manga series is one of the most influential stories in the world. It’s a pity that the work was not adapted into too many games.
Not long ago, the whole world had to receive sad news. Kentaro Miura, the author of the Berserk manga, passed away on May 6 from an acute aortic dissection. He lived to be 54 years old.
His passing has left a great deal of pain, not only in the manga-anime community but also in popular culture in general. Berserk – his brainchild – has inspired many other works, including two famous names, the Dark Souls and Bloodborne series.
Even so, it’s a pity that the Berserk brand itself does not own so many titles. So far, the swordsman Guts has only named exactly 3 games and in this article, we will review those games.
Released in 1999 in Japan for the SEGA Dreamcast, Sword of the Berserk: Guts’ Rage (also known as Berserk Millennium Falcon Arc: Chapter of the Flowers of Oblivion in Japan) was the first Berserk game released.
This is a Hack and Slash game developed by studio Yuke’s, set between episodes 22 and 23 of the series (or possibly chapters 182 to 190).
Guts’ Rage is famous for being one of the first games to adopt QTE (Quick Time Event), which is quite similar to Shenmue, the famous game released at the same time.
The game is relatively well-reviewed, with the popular Famitsu magazine giving it a score of 30/40.
Five years after the first game was released, Berserk Millennium Empire Arc was released on PS2. Since this is also the work of studio Yuke’s, it can be said that it is a sequel to the previous game. The game’s story takes place from episodes 22 to 27, revolving around the Millennium Empire arc.
With the development of technology, the game features more detailed polygonal models that look more sophisticated than its predecessor on the SEGA Dreamcast. The maps in the game are also much larger than the first game. The game also uses motion-capture technology, allowing character movements like more realistic martial arts poses. The original anime’s voice actors also returned to reprise their roles.
Released in 2017, Berserk and the Band of the Hawk is different from the two games above in that this is the work of developer Koei Tecmo.
Because of this, it can be seen that unlike the previous two games, Berserk and the Band of the Hawk has a Musou style.
The game closely follows the manga’s story, starting in the Golden Age Arc during Guts’ battle against Bazuso and ending in the Falcon of the Millennium Empire Arc, after Guts and his companions board the Seahorse.
Currently Berserk and the Band of the Hawk can be played on PS3, PS4, PS Vita and PC (via Steam).
If the Berserk series is continued through the drawings of his student Kentaro Miura, the writer hopes that in the future, we will have a Souls-style Berserk game produced by FromSoftware developer.
Since the developer is no stranger to the Dark Fantasy genre, combined with the Berserk-inspired Dark Souls series, it can be seen that a Berserk game developed by FromSoftware would be a top-notch game.
