The San Francisco Shock and Vancouver Titans faced off at the Overwatch League 2019 Finals in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania this past Sunday. MVP of OWL 2019, Jay “Sinatraa” Won of Shock completely overwhelmed his opponent with Doomfist. Meanwhile, 2019 rookie of the year, Vancouver’s Hyojong “Haksal” Kim has some impressive tackles, but that’s not enough to make a breakthrough. San Francisco Shock became the new king of Overwatch League 2019.
Continuing their journey of destruction in the playoffs, Shock competed strongly from the start against the Titans. Starting from map 1, Lijiang Tower, Sinatraa took the first teamfight with Meteor Strike, paving the way for a convincing victory. He finished the map Lijiang with 22 finishes.
On the Eichenwalde map, San Francisco used Minho “Architect” Park and DongJun “Rascal” Kim for Bastion/Mei. The plan worked well in the first attack, leaving Vancouver looking chaotic and clueless. However, the Titans responded, crushing Shock on their turn. In extra time, Rascal played well with Pharah, helping Shock win the map with a narrow victory over his opponent.
The third map is Temple of Anus, the map where the fighting phase usually takes place in Anubis. This time, the two sides struggled, unable to determine who was better until the last minute. Both were narrowly won in their respective rounds, but San Francisco once again excelled to win in extra time. Sinatraa continued to shine, creating many unbelievable clutches. Both Shock and Titans unleashed their ultimates in the final fight, but San Francisco was the more accurate side.
About to become the runner-up of the tournament, the Titans were forced to compete in a tight match to remove the gauze at the Watchpoint: Gibraltar map. Unfortunately, the final map of Vancouver got off to a bleak start. There was nothing they could do against Architect’s Bastion. Their push to point B was convincing, but everything fell apart at the last point, starting with Sigma’s positional error in Jjanu’s hand. The Titans could not hold back and were defeated by the excellent performance of the San Francisco Shock.
In professional Overwatch, teams with creative coaching staff and flexible rosters will often be the ones that shine the brightest in this diverse meta. The San Francisco Shock competed strongly in the 2-2-2 meta in stage four, slowly making it to the finals and defeating the tournament’s strongest opponent. A great end to the Overwatch League 2019, before players and teams get ready for the global tournament in 2020.
