Overwatch plot is time to turn page

Overwatch is a band of heroes that come together when the world needs them most. Within that organization were engineers, gladiators, pharmacists, and warriors who had been entrusted with the safety of the world. When an army of robots (called omnics) rebelled against humanity, Overwatch fought back – until the group split into multiple factions, leading to the demise of the organization. Overwatch is a complicated story as it includes both the good and bad sides of both the human and omnic sides. It all started with a cinematic trailer of two children in a museum released in November 2014.

Overwatch anecdotes have existed in history. The story line is pretty sporadic – every few months there’s a short film, a digital story chapter, and a clue right inside the game. Developer Blizzard Entertainment introduces the game and story from a future trailer, although Overwatch’s focus is on the past.

Nearly two years on from launch, Overwatch’s storyline remains in the past, with Blizzard spending the past two years filling up the game’s history. New characters have been introduced, adding new branches to Overwatch’s ever-evolving family tree. But maybe it’s time to move forward.

The first short film Blizzard released was Recall, which appeared on March 21, 2016 ahead of Overwatch’s May 24, 2016 release, pushing the narrative forward. Recall takes place when Winston has yet to contact Tracer and the rest of the Overwatch team. That painted the whole scene for players: Overwatch was once a team dedicated to keeping the peace, but has since disbanded. Even gathering members is illegal, Winston’s AI robot Athena explains in the video. Something bad has happened to Overwatch, and Blizzard is preparing the team to begin their journey of redemption.

We then learn more through comic book chapters and short films that Overwatch is a product of something called the Omnic Crisis, where cyborgs are created by humans, emotionally revolting against the government. People. The past goes back 30 years. The Omnic Crisis kicked off Overwatch, the omnic rise was extinguished, and Overwatch’s usefulness waned. Less than 10 years into the Overwatch timeline, we’ve been introduced to Overwatch’s best storytelling method: the Overwatch Uprising event, which combines storyline with campaign-style gameplay. Players can finally get their hands on Overwatch’s history, rather than just reading or watching it.

This led to Overwatch’s demise, although the reasons for the group’s disbandment remain unclear. Groups like Blackwatch may have harassed the organization, damaging Overwatch’s image as a peacekeeping team. The United Nations approved the Petras Act, making Overwatch illegal.

Overwatch’s history was told in a very unique way, but Blizzard had a hard time continuing the storyline. Much has changed after Winston’s Recall: many new characters are introduced (Ana, Sombra, Orisa, Doomfist, Moira, Brigitte) but we still don’t know much about their past. This is very necessary. To feel the connection between players and heroes in Overwatch, we need to know who they are. Who doesn’t want to learn about Mei’s gruesome story or Doomfist’s conflicted past?

Overwatch’s heroes are diverse and complex, and expanding the Overwatch universe with its history and characters is a very easy method of storytelling. Blizzard had the opportunity to expand the story with two story expansions for the two characters Sombra and Doomfist in November 2016 and July 2017. But all we get are hero recommendations, nothing more special. The story begins to pause again, with more loose ends than satisfying answers.

Sombra’s story is interesting in that Blizzard has scattered the stories all over the web, making for a pretty good augmented-reality game. That game leads to her short film, Infiltration, for which we learn her motives are rather ambiguous. Sombra is both good and bad, villain and hero at the same time. Sombra is very mysterious and unpredictable, which gives an impression of her personality.

Orisa’s appearance on March 21, 2018 also continued Sombra’s story, but still highlighted the intelligence of the young Numbani-born investor, Efi Oladele. Her story leads into Doomfist’s story, and Doomfist’s story ties into Sombra’s, bringing Overwatch’s story to the stage we see it today. From the Doomfist introduction that led to the dilapidated buildings of Numbani, to this day – defensive robots litter the ground, the suitcases of people still lying there waiting.

Doomfist’s return signals an impending change in Overwatch. A danger is near. Talen was gathering troops, with the leader having a huge iron fist. But since the attack on Numbani after the Doomfist successfully crossed the chest, nothing remarkable happened. Many new heroes will be added, and we will again discover how they got to their current positions, and players will only get to know that far. This is the story problem in an online shooter game.

Overwatch’s gameplay is not affected in the slightest by plot progress: all plot ties have been removed. Gameplay is always a priority, and new heroes will rock the arena. Blizzard is having a hard time balancing the history of Overwatch heroes and continuing to push the plot forward. One method could be to tell the side stories, outside the Overwatch organization of the heroes. How did they join the organization? D.Va is a good example: Use her story as the opening chapter of the new Overwatch organization. Almost two years on from the game’s release, we still don’t know what happened after Winston’s Recall short and why Doomfist chose this time. this to return to the battle.

All the elements point to something huge in the Overwatch universe. The 2nd anniversary of Overwatch’s launch on May 24 will be a golden time for Blizzard for the game’s storyline to continue. They can still choose to go the same way as before with the Overwatch Uprising event, but if there is a new event to lead the story forward, it will be interesting to watch, right?

Blizzard has established potential dangers in Overwatch history. We all know and love the characters in this game, and their potential in terms of plot is huge.
