Overkill’s The Walking Dead was a mess when it launched on PC late last year. Things took a turn for the worse, as console releases were delayed indefinitely. Now it’s even worse, when Skybound Entertainment, the series’ owner and the company that rescued Telltale’s The Walking Dead series, announced it’s not happy with Starbreeze. The company canceled the game contract with the company.
“As of now, we’ve canceled our contract with Starbreeze Studios and stopped talking about all things Overkill’s The Walking Dead,” Skybound said. “…since 2014, we’ve been working hard to expand the world of The Walking Dead into this FPS Co-op title. We worked hard on Starbreeze and resolved many of the issues we saw in the game, but in the end Overkill’s The Walking Dead didn’t live up to the standards or quality we were promised.”
“We deeply apologize to the fans and share your disappointment with the game. We continue to deliver the highest quality content, and will be looking for other video game options for our offerings.”
It’s not clear how it will affect the game’s updates on the PC version – the latest version came out a few weeks ago – but this is a real blow for Starbreeze. The company recently restructured itself to avoid bankruptcy amid allegations of insider trading, and earlier this month sold the rights to release System Shock 3 to developer OtherSide Entertainment.
It is not surprising that this happens. Earlier, in January, a member of The Walking Dead (Overkill) development team said everyone developing the game “knows it’s going to die weak,” and that “no matter how much you polish it, it doesn’t matter.” It’s still a disaster.”
