Overcoming the shaping scandal, Sonic became the biggest game-based movie of all time

Sonic the Hedgehog became one of the series video game most successful of all time with an estimated gross of $57 million at the domestic box office within a few days of its release.

Last year, Detective Pikachu made $54.3 million in its opening weekend. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Sonic raised $57 million in a total of three days. Current sales are expected to top $68 million. On its opening day, the film grossed $21 million, surpassing Detective Pikachu’s $20.5 million.

This is the best opening week of Paramount since the release of Mission: Impossible – Fallout in summer 2018. The Sonic movie was announced in 2014 under the Sony Pictures label, but was handed over to Paramount in 2017 after Sony withdrew.

This is an impressive achievement because after revealing the first trailer, Sonic received a backlash from the public. Outcry led to the character editing, so the film’s original release date was postponed.

Sonic’s visual redesign was done by Tyson Hesse, director of Sonic Mania cutscene animation and director of Sonic Mania Adventures animation.

Despite its box office success, Sonic the Hedgehog received mixed reviews from critics. Metacritic gave this film a below average score of 46.​
