No longer a movie, there will be an extreme military robot built based on gamers’ brain waves

Have you ever seen or heard about the movie The Last Starfighter – The Last Warrior (1984)? A rather old movie with the main character being a boy who is addicted to video games and seems to bury his life in those useless games until one day, he breaks the record for the highest score in the game. game called Starfighter. And this helped him really go out into space, being recruited into the position of machine gun for the alien resistance force just like in the game he played.

More than 35 years after The Last Starfighter hit theaters, with the development of science and technology, this idea is gradually being realized. The United States Advanced Defense Research Projects Agency recently awarded an investment of $316,000 (more than VND 7 billion) to the Institute. artificial intelligence of the University of Buffalo to conduct research on the brain activity and eye movements of gamer when playing games. All data will be recorded for the purpose of creating robot able to communicate and adapt flexibly to new situations like gamers.

To do the research, they developed a real-time strategy game, currently unnamed, with mechanics and features inspired by popular titles like StarCraft, Company of Heroes or Stellaris. In the game, players must use resources to build bases, control soldiers to defeat enemies, complete goals.

During the game, gamers are fitted with an EEG device to record all reactions and brain activity while eye movements are also monitored by extremely high-speed cameras. Professor Souma Chowdhury says their goal is to create an AI that can understand why people act the way they do, rather than simply copying them. They want the robots to be able to communicate with each other and quickly adapt to specific situations such as a large fire. Each robot will be divided to take on different jobs to complete the common task.

Based on the brainwave data collected, the team plans to create 250 robots, both in the air and on the ground. In it, one robot will act as a commander, the rest will be like employees who make individual decisions and perform smaller tasks to complete assigned tasks. Thanks to the development of science and technology, things that seemed impossible in the past will gradually be realized one day not far away.
