In a blog about the new Regional Major Rankings (RMR) system, Valve specifically shared some of the changes to the rules. These changes could have a big impact on Astralis.
When the Danish team announced they would be using a 6-man roster in March when adding Patrcik “es3tag” Hansen, it created controversy between Heroic and the organization FunPlus Phoenix. However, this decision backfired. Under Valve’s new rules, Astralis will be penalized if they decide to substitute es3tag at any point during the RMR.
The new rule seems to be focused on preventing teams from changing rosters during the season and preventing organizations from buying teams that have won the right and major spots.
Intentionally or not, this regulation has had a bad effect on Astralis. Currently, Astralis is the only team to choose a 6-member squad and the only team directly affected by Valve’s new regulations.
Astralis can lose up to 40% of their RMR when using a sub
The penalty is still heavy when changing members between RMR events. According to CSGO’s blog, the team will lose 20% of its total RMR for each member swap.
Valve said teams must register “5 players and 1 coach if applicable” in the regulations. Although the regulations do not specify whether Valve will allow the option to add subs in the registration list, but that is not important. Valve’s wording is very clear: using subs will lose RMR points.
However, this penalty does not stop at the event. Understood by Valve’s scoring, teams will lose an additional 20% of their total RMR when registering for the next RMR event. Unless this blog post is wrong, teams will lose 20% of their total score when replacing a player, and an additional 20% loss when signing up for another roster any time between now and the ESL One Rio Major. .
Using a coach to compete will be severely punished before the ESL One Rio Major
These rules also apply to coaches, with even harsher penalties. If the coach takes the position during the event and the team ranks high enough to earn RMR points, the team will lose 20% of the RMR points earned. If the player returns and the coach returns to the original position, the team will get back 80% of the 20% of the lost points.
Valve has announced three RMR tournaments ahead of the ESL One Rio Major. These RMRs replace the CSGO Minor system after ESL was forced to reschedule the event. One thing we don’t know yet is whether these rules apply to the ESL One Rio Major, and how Valve will apply them.
It’s still too early to tell what effect it will have on Astralis’ six-man squad plan. It will, of course, have an impact, but there’s also the possibility that es3tag could play for tournaments unrelated to the ESL One Rio Major.
