Minecraft gamers should be careful.

Minecraft is a popular video game and continues to attract many new users, but it is also a favorite target of the hacker community. Recently, Kaspersky researchers have noticed a significant increase in malware lurking in Minecraft mods on Google Play.

Malicious apps, posing as Minecraft mods, make the game inoperable. Besides, they can also cause the phone or smartphone to not work due to the proliferation of annoying ads.

During the heyday of Minecraft, attackers created Google Play programs that worked similar to the malware that was recently discovered by Kaspersky.

Kaspersky found about 20 malicious mods between July and November 2020 and confirmed that the malware infected up to one million Android devices.

In fact, the franchise is built with Java which seems to make it more vulnerable. As a result, third-party developers can easily create compatible apps or modpacks with the aim of customizing and enhancing the players’ gaming experience.

According to Kaspersky, when the program is first launched, it simply hides the icon, runs the browser, and starts opening dozens of pages filled with ads.

The latest dangerous Minecraft programs are updated versions of previously found malware. Note that these apps differ in that they will open the user’s browser every few minutes and display ads that fill the screen, both of which render the device useless.

Kaspersky said that Google was aware of the issue and that the fraudulent Minecraft mods had been removed from the app store. However, users and players should be wary.
