This story was sparked when a user posted a BIOS screenshot, showing 2 operating modes for the CPU’s IMC (RAM pulse control chip).

– In Gear 1, RAM will run at the same clock rate as IMC (1:1 ratio).

– In Gear 2, RAM will run at twice the clock rate of IMC (ratio 1:2). And the way this Gear 2 mode works is similar to FCLK (AMD Infinity Fabric Clock) on AMD CPUs.

According to the author of the post, his Core i7-11700K has reached the maximum RAM clock of DDR4-3733 in Gear 1 mode (1:1 ratio). If this is true, this Core i7 CPU will be quite long compared to the latest generation AMD Ryzen CPUs. Specifically, the Zen 3 architecture Ryzens were able to reach the FLCK frequency of 2000 MHz corresponding to DDR4-4000 RAM before the RAM and FLCK could no longer synchronize the clock.

Maybe when running in Gear 2 mode, the Core i7-11700K’s IMC can maintain clock synchronization with RAM at a higher clock rate. However, in doing so, it is using a method similar to AMD’s FLCK on Ryzen CPUs to increase the RAM clock sync limit.
